Great for my son

This book of worksheets is a great supplement to what your child is learning in school. I purchased this workbook, along with a couple of others, to help my son, who just changed schools. His new school is behind his previous school and I want to help him keep progressing and not get behind. My son has a learning disability and it helps for us to work together and spend extra time on subjects he struggles to master. I use these workbooks during school vacations and summer break to help my son keep his skills growing and to reinforce what he learned at school. I wish there was some background material for each of the subjects covered in the science worksheets so I could teach the concepts to my son, but that's what Google is for, I guess. These worksheets are perfect! We do one page of each subject a day and it's just enough to accomplish our goals. I highly recommend these books for parents and teachers!

This series has daily practice questions on each topic/ lesson in 5th grade science. This book stresses on basic facts which all students should know. Once they know the basics, they should be able to attempt more challenging questions which requires application of these basic facts. This book is suitable for students who have time constraints or cannot focus that long. Each day has only about 4 questions to master. (some multiple choice, fill in the blanks and open ended questions)
I wish the answer key in this book would gives more information required to answer open ended questions. There are no lessons before the questions, so you need to have a reference book or go online to read up about the topic first

Not a daily program

I thought this book could be used for a daily program. Each lesson does not give the background knowledge necessary for success. The book could be used as supplemental practice after the science topic is taught is taught formally.

A comprehensive, up-to-date look at genetic modification

I enjoyed this book because it is an up-to-date look at genetic modification. It explains all the major methods including zinc finger technology, TALENS and CRISPR-Cas9. However, a prior knowledge of biology is required to understand a lot of what author Jim Kozubek discusses. His discussions are comprehensive and he gets a lot of his materials through interviews. This is very interesting but some of the quotes are so long I forgot who he was interviewing. Sometimes he goes into too much detail and I would see the trees, not the forest. Kozubek also takes several detours that detract from the book. His discussion of Chomsky was incomprehensible and his discussion of Mary Shelley was interesting but largely irrelevant. His dives into philosophy were equally unappealing. However his discussions of the potential for gene editing and the ethical and legal implications were very good. Overall, despite the faults, I can recommend this book to anyone with a background in biology who wants to learn more about the subject.

Not as impressed as I'd hoped

The hymnal is a decent resource, but isn't extremely useful in determining the original reading of various hymns. The older texts have been altered to reflect contemporary concerns of feminist theology, even in removing certain references to God being Father (for one example, see "Great Is Thy Faithfulness," #276, footnote). The hymns are not mangled as a general rule, but I see the irritating "alt." designation next to more older texts than not. The type is clear and the musical settings are sound, so if egalitarian/feminist theology doesn't bother you, this is a fine hymnal.

Every Presbyterian Church Should Have This.

We understand that the Presbyterian Church is at the start of making a new hymnal (due to debut in 2014) to replace this one. Their theory is that every generation needs a new hymnal and if you look at the preceding hymnals (the blue or green hymnal of 1933, the maroon hymnal of 1955 and the ill-fated Worshipbook of the 70s), you see their point.

Even so, this one gets most things right and will be hard to beat.

The second half of the 20th century experienced what has been called the Hymn Explosion, and many of the best hymns of that time are represented in this book which is still called the "new" hymnal in most Presbyterian churches. There are some works that were hard to introduce to congregations that are now among their most beloved hymns represented: Let Us Talents and Tongues Employ, Here I Am Lord, etc. Fred Pratt Green, Timothy Dudley-Smith, Jane Parker Huber and Hal Hopson are all represented here, as well they ought to be.

There are also some under-utilized gems in it as well, songs like "Come O Spirit" (for Pentecost) and "God Bless Your Church" (for an anniversary) that have also found their way into other denominational hymnals.

All in all it is a great hymnal for expanding the congregations "Favorites" repertoire without being too jarring.

LindaJo McKim and company did yeoman's work in creating it. The layout is according to the liturgical year. The indexes are thorough and easy to use. The print is clear; the size is comfortable to hold while singing. There is a non-denominational version of this hymnal available too, from the publisher, for non-Presbyterian congregations who find it to their liking.

Not that impressed

I was there in church in 1992 when they unpacked the (then) new PRESBYTERIAN HYMNAL: HYMNS, PSALMS AND SPIRITUAL SONGS (pew edition). I have tried over the last 21 years to warm up to the hymnal, but while I admit it has its uses it has never become a favorite of mine. Despite the fact that the hymnal has 564 entries (not counting Service Music), it has never felt that full to me. One reason is that a number of the hymns are based on foreign sources -- Chinese in particular -- that never caught on; but I think an even stronger reason is that so many of the good old tunes are used, and re-used, and re-re-used, sometimes to the point of absurdity. In at least seven instances the same tune is used for four different hymns, which to me is overkill. The wonderful tune FOREST GREEN, for example, is quite correctly used as one setting for "O Little Town of Bethlehem" and for "All Beautiful the March of Days," but also for two other lyric settings of lesser import. The lesser-revered CAITHNESS is used for two different Psalms settings (why?) as well as for two additional hymns. ABERYSTWYTH furnishes the tune for two classics: "Jesus, Lover of My Soul" and "Watchman, Tell Us of the Night," but also for two more hymns I've never heard sung in any church. Nor is there any need for four different hymns set to the tune ES FLOG EIN KLEIN WALDVOEGELEIN. These two tendencies -- foreign tunes that stayed foreign and overuse of the same tune for too many multiple applications -- cut down on the usefulness of the PRESBYTERIAN HYMNAL and diminished its impact.

While this is going on, while one might say the Anglo-Britannic import of the old tunes its stretched to the max, there are a great many more familiar hymns in the American mold that are not to be found here. They include "Standing on the Promises," "Rock of Ages," "It Is Well With My Soul," "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day," "In Remembrance of Me," "We've A Story to Tell to the Nations," or anything based on BROTHER JAMES'S AIR (the 23rd Psalm, among others). While some of these may be a little on the low-church side, I have known Presbyterian congregations to enjoy them as much as Methodists or Baptists do. I really cannot find it in my heart to give this PRESBYTERIAN HYMNAL more than four stars, and a low four stars at that. The situation is further complicated by the fact that it is in its last full year of current-hymnal status. Later in 2013 the Presbyterians will release the new GLORY TO GOD hymnal, which is expected to become the standard pew hymnal for Presbyterian Church (USA) congregations. I can't imagine a Presbyterian congregation wanting to adopt this 1992 volume at this late date; for general home use one of the better private-market hymnals like WORSHIP AND REJOICE or the CELEBRATING GRACE HYMNAL would probably be more useful.

She is the author of The ISO 9000 Quality System: Applications in Food and Technology, released in February 2001, and the author of an HACCP-based chapter in the 2003 release of the Food Safety Compendium. Debby is an IRCA-approved auditor for ISO 9001, ISO 22000, and FSSC 22000.

Debby's main interests are assisting food, chemical, and other industries with business system development and maintenance activities. This includes ISO (9000, 14000, 18000, and 22000) compliance, HACCP, SQF, BRC, GMP, Food Hygiene, HACCP Prerequisite Programs, and Crisis Management. Debby is also an American Society of Quality (ASQ) Certified Quality Auditor, Certified HACCP Auditor, Certified Quality Manager, and a Certified Food Manager. Good for a quick answer

This book contains a child's drawing illustrating a point in each page. However, only one element of the drawing is explained, leaving the rest, and the context of the element in a vacuum. Explanations are simplistic and the logic behind them is left out. Part of learning a technique lies in understanding the thought process involved. If you want to understand why shading depicts anxiety, or why the author arrives at that conclusion, for instance, don't look for it in this book.

About the Author

Gary L. Fisher is Professor in the College of Health Sciences at the University of Nevada, Reno. He was the founder and first director of the Center for the Application of Substance Abuse Technologies where he developed undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education activities for addiction counselors, prevention specialists, and allied professionals. Dr. Fisher’s career has spanned 38 years and includes work as a private practice clinician and a public school psychologist. In addition to this textbook, he is the author of Rethinking Our War on Drugs: Candid Talk about Controversial Issues (2006), the senior editor of the Encyclopedia of Substance Abuse Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery (2009), and the author of Understanding Why Addicts are Not All Alike: Recognizing the Types and How Their Differences Affect Intervention and Treatment (2011).

Thomas Harrison is Associate Dean in the College of Education and Professor of Counseling and Educational Psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno. He developed the initial drug testing program for the University of Florida Athletic Department and has been a consultant for the State of Nevada Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Abuse. Dr. Harrison’s career has spanned 35 years in the field, including private counseling, sports psychology, and consulting practice. He is the author of Consultation for Contemporary Helping Professionals (2004) and several articles in professional journals.

Substance Abuse; Info for School Counselors - Review

This book clearly explains the relationship an addict has with their drug of choice, so that someone who may never have used/abused can understand the seemingly irrational behavior of the addict. But, the author does not stop there. Harrison goes on to explain various reasons why the addict's family may knowingly or unknowingly support the addict's habit, thus keeping the addict from recovery.

Very informative; I find the information in this book extremely useful for the field.A great tool for a beginning substance abuse counselor; the writing is plain and straight forward. Not too academic like many in this area of expertise.

All about threads

Pretty thin book, but focuses on exactly what is says: memory management and threading. This is not a beginners book, you will certainly need a good bit of prior Objective-C experience to get something out of it.

The first three chapters cover memory management and automatic reference counting (ARC). I found them to be okay at best. Nowadays, ARC pretty much just works, so most developers just turn it on and avoid the memory management headaches of the old days. The next two chapters are all about blocks, and again I found them to be only okay. If you already understand blocks, you won't learn anything new here. Skip them and move on to the good stuff.

The last three chapters cover threads, dispatch queues, and grand central dispatch (GCD). They are all good, with clear descriptions, and mostly readable code examples. Everyone knows threads can be useful, but everyone tends to be afraid of the complexity they can bring. The authors do a good job of showing how easily units of work can be threaded and dispatched, covering lots of different options provided by GCD. The hard part of concurrency is still making the units of work in the first place, and you won't find much help for that in any book.

In the end, it's probably a little pricy for just three good chapters, but if you want to know more about threading and GCD you could do a lot worse.

Explains how ARC and blocks are implemented in the runtime

This book explains how memory management and blocks are implemented in the runtime. It uses clang to rewrite objc to C++ (most of which is really C) and goes at length on what's going on. Not a light read, but contains information easier to digest than reading the Clang specifications. Also, the one book that promises to talk about the runtime and actually does.

I wont bother going on and on about this. Essentially this book covers all you need to gain an intermediate knowledge of GCD. Also handy as a reference. Worth buying.
