About the Author: RAJNIKANT M. KHATSURIA served as Additional Director, Central Water and Power Research Station, Pune, India, until his retirement in 2001. His special interests include spillways, energy dissipators, control and conveyance structures, and hydropower structures. He has completed nearly 150 projects pertaining to the above disciplines and has authored a number of technical papers and professional reports. He contributed towards the field standardization of overflow, non-overflow, and hydropower structures. He also served as the Senior Expert for WAPCOS (India) Ltd. (1989-90) for the planning and commissioning of the HLAB (hydraulics laboratory) at Al Taji, Baghdad, Iraq. He received the B.E. (1963) degree from Gujarat University, India, the M.E. (1975) degree from the University of Pune, India, and the M.S. (1981) degree from the University of Iowa, Iowa City.

Good but expensive

It is a clear writing book. It combines various sources of information, but some of them you can find free of charge online in USBR and USACE website. I found a lack of information about submerged deflectors with flatter angle (0 - 20 degrees) and a setting between flip buckets and submerged roller. This type of deflectors were investigated by Russian and Chinese long time ago, yet I haven't seen any Westerner account of them.

It is a minimalist epic telling of the abduction of Gerdur Gymisdottir from the land of giants to the court of Freyr of the 'wolf-grey eyes', and the subsequent events culminating in the birth of her son and her hopes of being saved by her own kin. It is full of iron-hard rocks and ice, serpents in the breast gnawing at the harness of hope, but also wide-reaching fields of corn whispering in the breeze and a throne carved with beasts and dragons-heads.

You could read the whole book in perhaps half an hour but it will take many months or years to begin to clear the ghosts and long-dead heroes from your mind.

The conveying of a poet into another language can be talked through in various ways. Stefan Tobler's preface caught hold of me by its enthusiasm, pleasure in the work, and that he cares. In contrast, David Treece's introduction had me bored by the first page. It's the difference - or is here - between the worker on the text and the standing apart academic. The translator's practical invitation and his conveying the pleasure of the task is, so far as I can tell, brought to fruition in his translations. Keith Richmond, The Tribune 2013

About the Author
Gerour Kristny is a phenomenally energetic Icelandic writer, having produced 18 books of fiction and non-fiction prose, as well as children's books and poetry, in the 16 years since the appearance of her first. She has won numerous prizes and awards, from the Icelandic Journalism Award in 2005 to the Icelandic Literature Prize in 2010 for Bloodhoof. She says she chooses each word of her poetry carefully so rarely needs to revise - it certainly shows in this volume.
