Reviewing the controversy over Robert Mapplethorpe's many photos of sadomasochistic scenes and Andres Serrano's iconoclastic sculpture, University of Pennsylvania English professor Steiner argues that art, however disturbing, cannot be obscene because artworks, as thought-experiments, are always open to personal interpretations. The anti-pornography campaign of Catharine MacKinnon and Andrea Dworkin ignores reports that no solid evidence exists to link pornography with rape or child abuse, declares Steiner, who castigates their militant feminism as an "unholy alliance between the far left and the far right." Interpreting Salman Rushdie's Satanic Verses as a satirical attack on Islamic fundamentalism, she defends his artistic integrity and reads his novel as a work of magic realism. She also ponders the failure of teachers to live up to their precepts, as exemplified by philosopher Martin Heidegger, a dues-paying Nazi. Steiner instead emphasizes that art is a virtual reality whose pleasurable enjoyment can enable us to master the difference between fantasy and reality. From the Mapplethorpe obscenity trial in Cincinnati to campus debates over academic freedom, recent cultural battles, Steiner says, arise from the same confusion. Muddled perception of the division between reality and fabrication, she argues, lies behind the holy wars against art. She thinks the American fundamentalist outcry against Mapplethorpe reflects the basic belief "that appreciating [art] is being it, and [fundamentalists] fear that the seductiveness of this art will transform them against their will." Steiner expands on this argument in cogent chapters about the antipornography dispute, the fatwa against Salman Rushdie, and multiculturalism in college literature courses. More than just attacking intolerance, Steiner considers renowned Nazi-sympathetic intellectuals Paul De Man and Martin Heidegger to spur appreciation of how difficult academic freedom can be. But, she maintains, no matter what a work of art represents or how tainted a professor's past, "we will not be led into fascism or rape or child abuse or racial oppression through aesthetic experience. Essays not chapters

Reading the book, I felt it should have been written more like a collection of essays, independent of each other. There is a certain lack of cohesion in transitioning from one scenario to another. Photography, literature and philosophy are all different subjects, they may have some similarities in how they are perhaps experienced or perceived, but overall there were too many tangents all across the table to follow some kind of reasonable middle ground were you could then move on to the next chapter.

The points she raises are important and the book is worth reading.

First half excellent; second half good.

Ms. Steiner eloquently upholds and defends freedoms protected by the First Amendment in the first part of the book. The second part seems less focused, and she seems to want it both ways - freedom of speech AND political correctness. She should remember that although racism and prejudice are bad, the ends do not justify the means, and she turned me off in the second half by seeming to say that political correctness are the only acceptable alternative to all these various -isms at work today. But, on the whole, because the first part is so good, I give it four stars.

A much better introductory rudimental snare drum method is

Budd Rich's Modern Interpretation of Snare Drum has almost nothing to do with the unique way Buddy Rich played snare drum or how the technique was used in his stye of drum set playing.. This book is a presentation of the basic 26 (plus a few variations) rudiments and nothing more.
Includes no transcriptions or soloistic motives used by Mr. Rich. A much better introductory rudimental snare drum method is:
"Contemporary Rudimental Studies & Solos" by Lalo Davila. There are also many many others.
The only relationship between Buddy Rich's drumming style and this book my Mr. MacKenzie are the photos of Mr. Rich that are placed throughout the book. Again, with absolutely no reference to how Mr. Rich incorporated the basic rudiments into his unique style of drumming.

About the Author
Dr Norman Jones is an Emeritus Professor of Engineering at the University of Liverpool. He was previously the A. A. Griffith Professor of Engineering, headed the University's Department of Mechanical Engineering (1982-1990) and served as Director of the Impact Research Centre (1985-2005). Prior to that, he was a Professor of Ocean Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has published more than 300 papers, principally on many aspects of the response of structures subjected to dynamic, impact and blast loadings which produce large inelastic strains. He is the honorary editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Impact Engineering and was editor (1983-87) and editor-in-chief (1988-2008) and is the author of the first edition of Structural Impact (1989, 1997). Professor Jones is honorary professor at Huazhong and Taiyuan Universities of Science and Technology in China, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (London) and a Foreign Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering.

A powerful book that puts adoption center stage

Adoption Nation, by Adam Pertman, is a powerful book that emphasizes the crucial need for continued adoption reform. A true advocate for all participants in adoption, Pertman illuminates for the reader a frank, poignant and balanced history of adoption, shining a spotlight on the myriad and often controversial issues associated with this different way of creating a family. This book is unlike some advocacy books whose authors promote their causes through inflammatory, detached or off-putting writing. Adoption Nation is a compelling read because Pertman is able to hold onto an emotional connection to the many complicated political, legal and personal adoption issues while simultaneously presenting a balanced, objective, and insightful assessment of these concerns. This book is a comprehensive one, covering such controversial and significant issues as an adoptee's fundamental right to her original birth certificate, negative consequences of secrecy, inconsistency in adoption legislation and policy, benefits of open adoption, the growth in single-parent and gay/lesbian-parent adoptive families, and intercountry and transracial domestic adoption, name but a few. Pertman eloquently describes the changes in the process he calls an adoption revolution while aptly capturing the intensity of the challenges involved in giving adoptees the voice they need to provide them with the fundamental rights they deserve. And for Pertman, advocating for adoptee rights does not mean neglecting the needs of birth and adoptive parents as he illustrates the legal and political dilemmas of adoption reform without losing site of the emotional complexities for all adoption participants. Excellent, informative book about all aspects of adoption

This book covers all aspects of adoption in America. The author is clearly in favor of open adoptions in terms of relationships among triad members (adoptive parents, birth parents, and adopted children) and transparency in adoption in general. He goes into great detail about each component of adoption, how it has changed over the last 60 years, and how it still needs to change. He is so clearly in favor of bringing all aspects of adoption into the open that it has the feel of an agenda -- the other perspective is introduced but only to refute it. But it's persuasively refuted. He includes lots of case stories of couples who have adopted. I enjoyed that he devoted chapters to each member of the triad so the reader learns a lot about each perspective.

Powerhouse of a Book

The publication of the revised and updated version of Adoption Nation by Adam Pertman is a significant event for all who care about the welfare of children and families. Pertman's ability to convey with clarity the remarkable stories of specific people in the adoption triad and an amazing amount of compelling data makes this a powerhouse of a book.

My own interest in this book is passionately personal. I'm the fortunate mother of two adopted daughters and the grandmother of two wonderful young adopteees. Because my feelings about adoption issues are writ so large, my standards for a book like this are very high. I want a good read and an articulate, well documented picture of the state of adoption here (and abroad). Pertman manages to capture it all -- dramatic portrayals of families when the stakes are as high as they get and solid analysis I trust about the politics, legalities, economics, and sociology of adoption. This is a brilliant rewrite of one of the most important books in the field. The organization Pertman heads, by the way, the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute is a powerhouse too. Big applause for Adam Pertman.
