David H. Barlow, Ph.D. is a Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry, Founder and Director Emeritus of the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders at Boston University. Valuable and well-described integrated treatment method

The Unified Protocol has been under development for several years, but now a full treatment manual exists. I last read about the method in Clinical Handbook of Psychological Disorders, Fourth Edition: A Step-by-Step Treatment Manual (Barlow: Clinical Handbook of Psychological Disorders), itself an extremely valuable assortment of empirically-validated treatments. But this new manual stands on its own, and I find that it adds enough insight and new material to make it worth buying in addition to CHPD.

Since the appearance in the aforementioned book, the developers have made a few changes and enhancements. They blend in motivational interviewing concepts at the front, so as to improve retention in treatment and commitment to completing homework. They also develop the mindfulness themes more fully, alongside the emotional exposure practices. Finally, I would highly recommend using the workbook, Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders: Workbook (Treatments That Work), because of the additional explanatory text for the client (and the treatment provider!) as well as the worksheets.

I find that this manual gives me enough to use the treatment method directly with my clients. I have five currently engaged in the Unified Protocol, including one case of social phobia with alcohol dependence and one case of mixed anxiety and depression. So far my clients have been responding well, in terms of finding the treatment engaging, and completion rates of homework have been higher. This is going to become my mainstay treatment for disorders of emotion. An excellent tool for any clinician.

Not surprisingly, David Barlow has written a clear description of the treatment approach that has been tested empirically. He includes a clear rationale for this expanded CBT approach to the treatment of anxiety and depression. I have spent decades treating patients with anxiety and depression, and I found this book quite useful.

The last word on Third Reich Lugers !

Jan C. Still has written the definative history to date, and in only 291 pages about the Lugers used by Germany from WW I to WW II under the collective title of " Third Reich Lugers. " Still's book is must reading for anyone who cares to learn about the Third Reich period in the life of one of the world's most outstanding guns in history. He covers not only the Pistolen-08',(Luger gun), but also all the known Luger accessories. This book is a must have, and a good read to boot.

The book provides students with an introduction to the diversity, complexity and connectedness of writing in higher education today.

Part I, a short Guide to Academic Writing, teaches rhetorical strategies and approaches to academic writing within and across the major divisions of the academy. For each writing strategy or essay element treated in the Guide, the authors provide examples from the reader, or from one of many resources included in each chapter’s Suggested Additional Resources. Part II, Real World Topics, also refers extensively to the Guide. Thus, the Guide shows student writers how to employ scholarly writing practices as demonstrated by the readings, while the readings invite students to engage with scholarly content.

About the Author

Michael Rectenwald is Master Teacher in Global Liberal Studies at New York University. His articles have appeared in several journals and anthologies, including the British Journal for the History of Science, Endeavour, College Composition and Communication, and George Eliot in Context (Cambridge UP). Rectenwald is also author of Nineteenth-Century British Secularism: Science, Religion, and Literature (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015), and co-editor of Global Secularisms in a Post-Secular Age (De Gruyter, 2015).

Lisa Carl is Associate Professor in the Department of Language and Literature at North Carolina Central University. Her work has been published in such books and journals as CLASH!: Superheroic Yet Sensible Strategies for Teaching Students the New Literacies Despite the Status Quo, American Indian Culture and Research Journal, and Whitman’s and Dickinson’s Contemporaries: An Anthology of Their Verse. She is co-producer of the podcast “Voices from the Days of Slavery: Stories, Songs and Memories” (American Folklife Center, Library of Congress).

About the Author

Samuel N. Cohen is an Associate Professor in the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford, an associate member of the Oxford-Man Institute for Quantitative Finance and a member of the Oxford-Nie Financial Big Data Laboratory. He has a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Adelaide, along with undergraduate degrees in Mathematics and Finance.

Robert Elliott received Bachelors and Masters degrees from Oxford University, and his Ph.D. and D.Sc. from the University of Cambridge. He has held positions at Newcastle, Yale, Oxford, Warwick, Hull, Alberta, Calgary and Adelaide, and visiting positions in Toronto, Northwestern, Kentucky, Brown, Paris, Denmark, Hong Kong and Australia. From 2001 to 2009 he was the RBC Financial Group Professor of Finance at the University of Calgary, Canada, where he was also an Adjunct Professor in both the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Electrical Engineering. From 2009 to 2013 he was an Australian Professorial Fellow at the University of Adelaide. Professor Elliott has authored nine books and over 450 papers.

The slow start may deter some readers, and Mrs. Baker is too good to be true: she arranges a meeting between Holling and the New York Yankees, brokers a deal to save a student's father's architectural firm, and, after revealing her past as an Olympic runner, coaches Holling to the varsity cross-country team. I loved this book

I loved this book. It is marketed as a children's book and it won a much deserved Newbery Honor. It is from a 7th grade boy's perspective during 1967-1968 (Vietnam War and the assassinations) while learning Shakespeare. It has so many little tidbits to think about. Tidbits like:

"But perfect or not, it was hard living in between."

"We read The Merchant of Venice the next Wednesday, too, and finished it on the last Wednesday of October. After we closed our books, Mrs. Baker asked me to discuss the character of Shylock. “He isn’t really a villain,” I said, “is he?” “No,” said Mrs. Baker, “he isn’t.” “He’s more like someone who wants...” “Who wants what, Mr. Hoodhood?” “Someone who wants to become who he’s supposed to be,” I said. Mrs. Baker considered that. “And why couldn’t he?” she asked. “Because they wouldn’t let him. They decided he had to be a certain way, and he was trapped. He couldn’t be anything except for what he was,” I said. “And that is why the play is called a tragedy,” said Mrs. Baker."

"At the happy ending of The Tempest, Prospero brings the king back together with his son, and finds Miranda’s true love, and punishes the bad duke, and frees Ariel, and becomes a duke himself again. Everyone—except for Caliban—is happy, and everyone is forgiven, and everyone is fine, and they all sail away on calm seas. Happy endings. That’s how it is in Shakespeare. But Shakespeare was wrong. Sometimes there isn’t a Prospero to make everything fine again. And sometimes the quality of mercy is strained."

No kidding, I thought. “He wrote to express something about what it means to be a human being in words more beautiful than had ever yet been written.”Mrs. Baker looked at me for a long moment. Then she went and sat back down at her desk. “That we are made for more than power,” she said softly. “That we are made for more than our desires. That pride combined with stubbornness can be disaster. And that compared with love, malice is a small and petty thing.”

Great balance of fun and serious

Bought this book after reading it because my wife and I felt it was worth having. Actually, I listened to the audiobook, but my wife actually read it. The story has a little bit of everything. It follows the adventures of a young teenage boy dealing with life and trying to figure out who he wants to be. The adventures cover the school year and range from the comedic escape of the class rats to the emotional growth required when one's hero dies. It has pranks, Shakespeare, and political issues, but everything is well balanced and suitable for even young audiences.

After buying this copy, we listen to it as a family while my 10 year old read along. The 5 year old didn't quite grasp the more serious concepts, but enjoyed it anyway. As for me, it was still entertaining to listen to again. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a quick, fun read or as something that can spark discussions for a book club. I don't think you would be disappointed.

Finally, a book that can stand beside Bel Kaufman's "Up the Down Staircase" and Frances Gray Patton's "Good Morning, Miss Dove". Good teachers have almost been driven out of existence because the added baggage of standardized tests, profiles, red tape and (lack of) discipline hamper them at every turn. This marvelous gem truly gives credence to the phrase "it takes a village..." I have become a great fan of Gary Schmidt since my grandson had to read this book as well as "Okay, for Now". As a parent, this reminds us that we are ALL teachers of those around us...some for good, some for bad.

Gerald the giraffe doesn't really have delusions of grandeur. He just wants to dance. But his knees are crooked and his legs are thin, and all the other animals mock him when he approaches the dance floor at the annual Jungle Dance. "Hey, look at clumsy Gerald," they sneer. "Oh, Gerald, you're so weird." Poor Gerald slinks away as the chimps cha-cha, rhinos rock 'n' roll, and warthogs waltz. But an encouraging word from an unlikely source shows this glum giraffe that those who are different "just need a different song," and soon he is prancing and sashaying and boogying to moon music (with a cricket accompanist). In the vein of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Gerald's fickle "friends" quickly decide he's worthy of their attention again.

With this rhyming, poignant (in a cartoonish way) tale, Giles Andreae, author of Rumble in the Jungle, and numerous other picture books, shows insecure young readers that everyone can be wonderful, even those that march to the beat of a different cricket. The rhymes are somewhat awkward, but the bold, bright watercolors by Guy Parker-Rees will invite readers to kick up their heels and find their own internal harmony. (Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter

All the jungle's got the beat, but Gerald the giraffe has four left feet. Such is the dilemma in this British team's bouncy if didactic picture book about self-esteem. As a multitude of fleet-footed beasts eagerly "skip and prance" at the annual Jungle Dance in Africa, Gerald feels sad "because when it comes to dancing/ he was really very bad." Jeered by waltzing warthogs and cha-cha-ing chimps when he attempts to cut a rug, Gerald hangs his head and leaves the celebration behind. Luckily, a friendly cricket appears in the moonlight, chirping a morale-boosting song of self-confidence that soon sets Gerald in graceful motion. Andreae's rhyming text has a jaunty rhythm that's likely to spark interest in the read-aloud crowd, in spite of a heavy-handed message. Parker-Rees's kicky depictions of slightly anthropomorphic animals boogying on the dance floor are the highlight here. His watercolor and pen-and-ink artwork exudes a fun, party vibe. Ages 3-6.

reS-K-A clumsy giraffe is instantly transformed into an exceptional dancer when he finds music that he loves. Gerald has tall, thin legs, which are good for standing still, but when he tries to run, his crooked knees buckle. At the annual Jungle Dance, he is laughed off the floor. A cricket tells him that "-sometimes when you're different you just need a different song." This advice enables the lonely creature to dance, much to the amazement of the other animals. The rhythmic text follows a pattern of four lines per stanza. Some rhyme and others do not. Some flow smoothly; others are forced. One line states that, "He threw his arms out sideways-." Huh! Giraffes don't have arms. Full-page color illustrations done in pen and ink and watercolor are bold and warm. Characters are whimsical and expressive, but they don't make up for the drastic and unbelievable turnaround that takes place upon hearing the cricket play his violin. For stories about individuality, stick with Helen Lester's Tacky the Penguin (1988) and Three Cheers for Tacky (1994, both Houghton) or Robert Kraus's Leo the Late Bloomer (HarperCollins, 1971) and Owliver (Prentice-Hall, 1974; o.p.).

There is a reason this book is a top seller!

There's a reason this book is a top seller, it's adorable! I first read this book in a toddler book club when I was a nanny, I now read this book to my own children. I have read this book probably a hundred + times (not an exaggeration) and I still love it. I haven't found a child who didn't like this book, it's so cute. Great story, nice colorful illustrations. I highly recommend this book!

Great Book, Esepcially for Kiddos with Special Needs

I'm going to side with every other member of this book's fan club. I bought his because I have a beautiful little boy who has some very specialized challenges, and I loved the message this book sends...that you can be different, you can even not be good at certain things in other people's eyes, but there can still be something beautiful only you can contribute. And I want my son to know and to hear that message that just like Gerald the Giraffe, he's got a very special dance that he'll be able to do. And I want him to be able to see that it's possible too, because I know sometimes it can be hard, especially when you're in therapy all the time and therapy is all about what's not going well and what's not going like normal, so I truly think this book has great value especially for kiddos who may struggle to do things the way other people "normally" do. It sends a very nice "yes you can" message, and I love it.
