About the Author
SAUL STAHL, PhD, is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Kansas and a former systems programmer for IBM. He received his MA from the University of California, Berkeley, and his PhD from Western Michigan University. His main field of expertise is combinatorics. In 1986 he received the Carl A. Allendoerfer Award for excellence in expository writing from the Mathematical Association of America.

Organization

The main purpose of this book is to provide prospective high school mathematics teachers with the geometric background they need. Its core, consisting of Chapters 2 to 5, is therefore devoted to a fairly formal (that is, axiomatic) development of Euclidean geometry. Chapters 6, 7, and 8 complement this with an exposition of transformation geometry. The first chapter, which introduces teachers-to-be to non-Euclidean geometries, provides them with a perspective meant to enhance their appreciation of axiomatic systems. The much more informal Chapters 9 through 12 are meant to give students a taste of some more recent geometric discoveries.

The development of synthetic Euclidean geometry begins by following Euclid's Elements very closely. This has the advantage of convincing students that they are learning "the real thing." It also happens to be an excellent organization of the subject matter. Witness the well-known fact that the first 28 propositions are all neutral. These subtleties might be lost on the typical high school student, but familiarity with Euclid's classic text must surely add to the teacher's confidence and effectiveness in the classroom. I am also in complete agreement with the sentiments Todhunter displayed in the previous excerpt: No other system of teaching geometry is better than Euclid's, provided, of course that his list of propositions is supplemented with a sufficient number of exercises. Occasionally, though, because some things have changed over two millennia, or else because of errors in the Elements, it was found advantageous either to expound both the modern and ancient versions in parallel or else to part ways with Euclid.

In order to convince prospective teachers of the need to prove "obvious" propositions, the axiomatic development of Euclidean geometry is preceded by the informal description of both spherical and hyperbolic geometry. The trigonometric formulas of these geometries are included in order to lend numerical substance to these alternate and unfamiliar systems. The part of the course dedicated to synthetic geometry covers the standard material about triangles, parallelism, circles, ratios, and similarity; it concludes with the classic theorems that lead to projective geometry. These lead naturally to a discussion of ideal points and lines in the extended plane. Experience indicates that the nonoptional portions of the first five chapters can be completed in about three quarters of a one semester course. During that time the typical weekly homework assignment called for about a dozen proofs.

Chapters 6 and 7 are concerned mostly with transformation geometry and symmetry. The planar rigid motions are completely and rigorously classified. This is followed by an informal discussion of frieze patterns and wallpaper designs. Inversions are developed formally and their utility for both Euclidean and hyperbolic geometry is explained.

The exposition in Chapters 8 through 12 is informal in the sense that few proofs are either offered or required. Their purpose is to acquaint students with some of the geometry that was developed in the last two centuries. Care has been taken to supply a great number of calculational exercises that will provide students with hands-on experience in these advanced topics.

The purpose of Chapter 8 is threefold. First there is an exposition of some interesting facts, such as Euler's equation and the Platonic and Archimedian solids. This is followed by a representation of the rotational symmetries of the regular solids by means of permutations, a discussion of their symmetry groups, and a visual definition of isomorphism. Both of these discussions aim to develop the prospective teacher's ability to visualize three dimensional phenomena. Finally comes the tale of Monstrous Moonshine.

Chapter 9 consists of a short introduction to the notions of homeomorphism and isotopy. Chapter 10 acquaints students with some standard topics of graph theory: traversability, colorability, and planarity. The topology of surfaces, both of the closed and the bordered varieties, is the subject of Chapter 11. Algorithms are described for identification of the topological type of any bordered surface. Two knot theoretic invariants are described in Chapter 12, including the recently discovered Jones polynomial.

Exercises

In Chapters 2 to 5 exercises are listed following every two or three propositions. This helps the professor select appropriate homework assignments and eliminates some of the guesswork for students. The great majority of these exercises call for straightforward applications of the immediately preceding propositions. On the other hand, the chapter review exercises provide problems for which the determination of the applicable propositions does require thought. In the remaining and less formal chapters the exercises appear at the end of each section. Each chapter concludes with a list of review problems. Solutions and/or hints to selected exercises are provided at the end of the book.

The exercises that are interspersed with the propositions are of four types. There are relational and constructive propositions in whose answers the students should adhere to the same format that is used in the numbered propositions. The third type of exercises has to do with the alternate spherical, hyperbolic, and taxicab geometries; in these the appropriate response usually consists of one or two English sentences. The fourth, and last, type of exercises calls for the use of some computer program, and these are marked with a (C).

In the other chapters, namely Chapter 1 and Chapters 6 through 12, exercises are listed at the end of each section. The emphasis in these is on the algorithmic aspect of geometry. They mostly require the straightforward, albeit nontrivial, application of the methods expounded in the text.

Notation and Conventions

Chapters 2 to 5 of this text present most of the content of Book I and selected topics from Books, II, III, IV, and VI of The Elements. In addition to the conventional labeling of propositions by chapter, section, and number these propositions are also identified by a parenthesized roman numeral, number that pinpoints their appearance in Euclid's book. For example, the Theorem of Pythagoras is listed as Proposition 3.3.2(L47). Exercises are identified in a similar manner,: Exercise 5.313.6 is the sixth exercise in group B of the third section in Chapter 5. The symbol (C) is used to distinguish exercises that call for the use of computer applications.

Good book in undergraduate geometry. High school students can also get some insights here. The author briefly introduces several important topics in geometry: Euclidean, Non-Euclidean, Projective, Topology, Graph, Symmetry... The print quality is much better than most of the other Dover publications. The plots are clear and accurate.

About the Author
After years of studying and teaching philosophy, Jean Vanier founded L'Arche, named after Noah's ark, a network of more than one hundred communities in thirty countries, inhabited by people with disabilities and their caregivers. Vanier is the son of former governor general of Canada Georges Vanier. Jean Vanier is also co-founder, with Marie-H�l�ne Mathieu, of Faith and Light, which brings together people with disabilities and their family and friends. There are now 1,300 Faith and Light communities in seventy-five countries.

Another awesome book by Jean Vanier

Another awesome book by Jean Vanier. This would be great reading for any community to share in. When I was a part of a community of people with disabilities and their families, I took parts of this book as weekly meditation material and it resonated so deeply. But anyone who is a part of a community life would benefit from this book, especially if the community seems to be "broken". This is one I keep on my bookshelf, and if it disappears (as they do sometimes), I buy another one.

Wisdom from struggles with the heart

In this short read, Jean Vanier touches on some of the primary heart issues with which people struggle. He is talking directly from his experience with his wisdom from the experience of working with and loving disabled people. One theme is give your life to others and see how God has designed us to live in community. The thoughts I had while reading is how to diagnose my own heart and my motives. Once my own agenda is stripped away and my actions are solely for others, which is rare, then I can see my own heart and superficial humility - and then there is an opportunity for real growth. This should be on the bookshelf of anyone seeking to serve others. There are many nuggets of wisdom in his words regardless of the people in your life: children, parents, coworkers, neighbors, etc.

Just the book for a thoughtful individual investor

I am an individual investor, and am doing my damnest to educate myself and find my personal profitable trading niche. My first step towards success was when I learned to recognize the CNBC and Wall Street bulls--t for what it is. I've been studying every available investment book, in search of comprehension.
I rate this one very highly (even if the style is on occasion a bit turgid) because it provides a solid educational foundation into the workings of the market, and a solid grounding in understanding how to be a profitable contrarian by better identifying symptoms of crowd excess (hence, intermediate term tops and bottoms).

A Book for Market Novices

In my opinion, this book has virtually nothing new to add to the concept of using volume in trading. A novice in the market might find this to be a useful summary, but I was very disappointed with a rehash presented here. William O'Neil's books have most of this information. This is the first book I have ever returned to Amazon for a refund.

no new concepts or trading rules to learn

i read the 2 reviews beforme mine and agree with both of them. if you're new and searching for some foundation, this is an ok book to learn a bit about the effects of volume. however, if you're familiar with the basics of trading and the various techniques of technical analysis. this book is not much of a use.
it describes 2 volume based indicators but doesnt tell you how it should be used; it describes various high volume situations but doesnt really tell you what to do (in honesty, no one can!).
if you're not new to trading but looking for some fresh idea, this isnt the book.

The book is very solid, well organized and quantitative at level that can be used by graduate students or senior undergrad. It explains in detail many important subjects that are scattered in other boos. It is worth the price, however the paperback edition is very poor.

Transformative!

This book does for motorcyclists what Wolfgang Langeweische's seminal work, Stick and Rudder, did for aviators. It builds and sharpens skills through a thorough understanding of how the machine in question acts in its natural, steady state and -- more importantly -- WHY it reacts to our control inputs the way it does and why, in many cases, its proper control requires counter-intuitive actions and reactions from us.

Admittedly, Spiegel's book is not as reader-friendly as Langeweiche's. Spiegel is a behavorial psychologist and it shows. He obviously enjoys and takes great pride in his analytical talents and peppers his work with sometimes esoteric observations and anecdotes. Yet, the more scholarly and initially less accessible aspects of the work are nicely balanced by simple, useful and practical training and riding hints and tips. Taken as a whole, the book comes together nicely in the end though, as others have noted, it may require some rereading in parts. Study rather than casual reading of Spiegel's book is well worth the effort and the "aha!" moments experienced by the serious student can be positively transformative.

Not incidentally, Meredith Hassall, who must have been faced with a formidable task, translated this book from German into English expertly and beautifully. Wunderbar!

The 'mental' side of motorcycling - what no one told you.

This is a great book that deals with the mental side of motorcycling - all the things that no one told you, and you need to know.

First of all, I need to mention that this is a fairly heavy read. It's not a book that you can expect to read through and understand, I found that I needed to re-read certain portions numerous times until I understood it completely. This could be due to the fact it is a translation from a German language original, or maybe Mr Speigel has written it as he thought best. I have been recommending this book to alot of people, but always with that caution - which seems well justified now that I read other reviews here and find that there is even a medical doctor who has failed to comprend the great points to be found in this book...

To anyone who is skeptical that Upper Half could actually contain any valuable information that you haven't heard before, just stop to think - how many times have you heard a motorcycle racer say that racing is 10% physical and 90% mental? There's a reason for that. For anyone who takes the time to really think about motorcycling - indeed performance motorcycling - it's obvious that there is a very large mental component involved. What I find very surprising is that there are not many books or instruction that deals with the mental side. Upper Half is a valuable resource that practically fulfils that entire void and answers questions that you hadn't even thought about.

If you have ever struggled with being 'afraid' to use greater lean angle, or being unsure about the limits of traction - this is the book that can answer your questions. Rather than just telling you what to do, or what not to do, Upper Half actually explains the reasons behind why we are afraid to use extreme lean angles, and why we can have such trouble coming to terms with the traction provided by modern sports tyres. This is a great approach. Personally I found it to be much more powerful and effective once I know the reason why, rather than just doing something without knowing the reason for it. I spent some time thinking about the points in this book, and once I 'got my head right' it was amazing that it had an instant effect on my riding, and every aspect of my riding - road, track, and everything in between.

For anyone who is thinking that they are interested in learning more about the mental side of motorcycling, but aren't sure you can make it through some heavy reading - I would recommend starting with Total Control by Lee Parks, which touches on some points in a much easier to read manner. For people who want more - Upper Half is comprehensive and sure to inform.

Not for Everybody - But it Should Be

I've been riding my whole life and I read a lot of books on motorcycle riding techniques. I also train new riders. This book gives an insight into the coordination of man and machine that I've never seen touched on before. Its not an easy read. You have to deeply consider what he is explaining. But once you understand his approach to rider/motorcycle operation new skills will surely follow.

If you desire to get the most out of your riding, becoming a more proficient rider, and really understanding what is going on as you motor down the road this book is worth reading. The author presents frequent examples to help you understand the point he is making.

This book will earn a spot on my shelf as a valued reference tool.
