I accept that the way I tell the story of that night on the train might not be the way it actually happened, in specific detail, in exact rhythm and tone and sequence; this version has received a little lacquer here and there as life piled up on it; to simplify it or make it feel better or cleaner a few facts have possibly been dropped out or slipped in; perhaps even a few images have been recolored or restored to a brightness they never had. That’s what time and the mind do, for better or worse, and only a fool would deny it. Through the window I can see the purple black between the stars, and the moon rising in the corner, and I think this night, as that one, can’t last; the black will begin to fade slowly to gray, and the morning light will bring with it the end.

Disappointed With Ending

I was sold on this book before I read it because I'd heard the author speak at a book signing. I liked him immediately and appreciated all he had to say about his experience as a writer/reader. I have not read any of his previous (non fiction) books, but have downloaded one on my MP3 player (In Broad Daylight). I have not listened to it yet. I was excited to read his 1st novel "Joy of Killing", & despite being a rather slow reader, I finished it in two sittings. I just finished it this eve, and am sorry to admit that I was left disappointed. The writing is definitely exemplary. The book held my attention throughout. As a psychologist, I was fascinated by the mental torture of the protagonist, and his vacillation between his recollection of events, and his being admittedly unsure regarding the accuracy of those memories. That all rang true to me - not uncommon in insightful individuals. However the ending left me unsatisfied. I know from hearing the author speak, that the ending of a novel was critical to him as an author. He was determined to not make the same mistakes of other authors whose book conclusions were fraught with problems, trying up details too quickly or leaving many unanswered questions. I do not want to write a "spoiler" review, so I will not give details of the specifics why I was left disappointed with the ending. "Joy of Killing":is definitely worth reading. I will look forward to read more reviews of this book. So far 18 of the 19 reviews have all been 5 stars. So my being unhappy with the ending is definitely in the minority.

The Joy of Killing makes me question what's wrong with me since I liked it so much... very dark

Whoa!! The Joy of Killing is twisted!! Makes me wonder what's wrong with me that I liked it so much. This took psychological thriller to the next level. I was unable to put it down even though I wanted to take a break to eat or walk my dog I just could not put it down. I still don't know if I got it but I loved it. It's kind of like a mix between the writing of Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk and the Inception movie and maybe a little Sixth Sense rolled into one messed up book. I would highly highly recommend if you're a fan of suspense/thrillers.

Spellbinding, psychological thriller

Romantic, erotic and tender - frightening, menacing, violent: the two sides of a man revealed in a deeply compelling psychological mystery.
This novel kept me under its spell entirely. And the truths it reveals about the place of longing, guilt, shame, doubt and delusion in the life of its protagonist are profound for all men, and the women who love them.

About the Author
Alison Gopnik is a professor of psychology and an affiliate professor of philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley. She is an internationally recognized leader in the study of children's learning and development. She writes the Mind and Matter column for The Wall Street Journal and is the author of The Philosophical Baby and coauthor of The Scientist in the Crib. Gopnik has written yet another wonderful, wise book about children.

Gopnik's gardener/carpenter metaphor goes to the heart of the way children are seen in modern America, epitomized by the recent coinage "parenting." A gardener supports animate objects as they grow according to their own internal nature. A carpenter shapes inanimate objects entirely according to his own will. In Gopnik's words:

"In the parenting model, being a parent is like being a carpenter. You should pay some attention to the kind of material you are working with, and it may have some influence on what you try to do.

"But essentially your job is to shape that material into a final product that will fit the scheme you had in mind to begin with. And you can assess how good a job you’ve done by looking at the finished product. Are the doors true? Are the chairs steady? Messiness and variability are a carpenter’s enemies; precision and control are her allies. Measure twice, cut once.

"When we garden, on the other hand, we create a protected and nurturing space for plants to flourish. It takes hard labor and the sweat of our brows, with a lot of exhausted digging and wallowing in manure. And as any gardener knows, our specific plans are always thwarted. The poppy comes up neon orange instead of pale pink, the rose that was supposed to climb the fence stubbornly remains a foot from the ground, black spot and rust and aphids can never be defeated."

She is equally critical of school systems, with their emphasis on standardized testing and achievement measured by grades. She notes that school is a recent invention. Well into the 19th century most children learned through apprenticeship, and much of that apprenticeship was home on the farm or in the workshop, with two parents. She observes that children simply do not learn basic life skills such as cooking, cleaning, and basic carpentry. They are not in any way apprenticed to their parents, and don't pick these things up. I add that they do not learn how to get along with the opposite sex. Sex education is no substitute for unsupervised or lightly supervised play. Gopnik provides a lovely example. The schools never teach the rhyme "John and Mary sitting in a tree K I S S I N G." Nonetheless, kids of every generation she has inquired about know the rhyme, and in the process of learning it they probably learned more than the tab A goes into slot B kind of information they pick up from sex education.

Gopnik is rather defensive of modern technology. She is not scared that children are increasingly preoccupied with their electronic devices. I am more of a skeptic – my five-year-old does not have them. As a parent of grown children and a long time substitute teacher I observe that this generation simply does not read as much as mine did. This would not be bad if some better technology had supplanted it. Video has simply not done that. Material delivered via video is slower, and an oral vocabulary generally somewhat diminished. From my observation, the chief benefit of video and computers is in the presentation of graphic images accompanying a lecture. Even at that, pictures in books usually work better, and PowerPoint is seldom done well. I would challenge her to inquire deeply as to how many of her undergraduate students at Berkeley actually read her books, or any of the assigned books in the depth that she did as a student.

She attributes many modern problems such as the ADHD epidemic to the attempt to force kids to perform tasks for which they are not temperamentally or intellectually prepared. Her advice would be to have faith – let them follow their own paths.

Gopnik's area of expertise is early childhood development. Several chapters of this book recount the findings that she describes in more detail in The Philosophical Baby. The core message is that children are very alert and are doing their own thinking from an early age. They are not whatsoever the passive, receptive vessels that the reigning paradigms of "parenting" and teaching would assume. They learn all the time, especially through play. They will learn in any case, and that process may be stultified my parents and teachers who impose too much structure on the process.

Gopnik places herself at the intersection of two major streams of contemporary thought. Her setting in Berkeley, and her Jewish roots incline her to believe that all children are born more or less equal and must be treated equally. On the other hand, her experience as a scientist and as a mother and grandmother goes the other way. Even though all children may have an equal right to the good things of this world, her children and grandchildren are special. Isn't that the way we all are? She is honest enough to admit the dilemma. She writes:

"The very idea of a law, for example, is that some principle applies equally to all. But I care about and am responsible for my own specific children, far more than children in general. And so I should be."

One of the best bits of learning to fall out of this book has nothing to do with children. The philosopher Isaiah Berlin promoted the notion of value pluralism. This is the idea that our fundamental values are and will always be in conflict with one another. We have to have the humility to recognize it. Whenever somebody has a plan to end all human misery – think Robespierre and Karl Marx – look out!

Her discussion of the evolution of motherhood gives a great deal of credit to Sarah Blaffer Hrdy, the books of whom I have read, Mother Nature and Mothers and Others, are strong in the position that the human race has been as successful as we are precisely because families and tribes are so involved in supporting the mother and raising children. We are the only primates to undergo menopause. Why? Because the grandmother's genetic interest is served by supporting grandchildren, not bearing more children herself.

I am somewhat surprised that she does not cite Judith Rich Harris' books, No Two Alike: Human Nature and Human Individuality and The Nurture Assumption on the importance of their genetic inheritance, caregivers and peers relative to parents in influencing the way a child develops. A less surprising oversight is Joel Paris' Myths of Childhood which also stresses the resourcefulness and resilience of children when they are simply given guidance and support and trusted to grow more or less on their own.

Gopnik spends a vast number of words on the topic of why we have children, but seems yet to miss the point. She is right to say that they represent a tremendous expense. She is right again to say that they are a gamble – you can't count on them to be successful or to be grateful. She slides over the most fundamental point. We are self replicators. That's what we do. The single thing we can say with certainty about our ancestors is that they all reproduced successfully. Our family, clan, tribe and nation historically pushed us to reproduce. It was altruistic to the extent that those groups belonged to a tight gene pool. It was not whatsoever altruistic in the recognition that the gene pools were in competition.

She comes closest as she writes that "figuring out why being a parent is worthwhile isn't just a personal or biological question, but a social and political one. Caring for children has never, in all his human history, just been the role of the biological mothers and fathers. From the very beginning it's been a central project for any community of human beings. This is still true." She might add that our religion and tribal identity still push in this direction. That is what is so frightening about the immigrants pressing on the United States and Europe. They still have their religion and tribalism – and it is effective.

Reprising a theme from her earlier books, she devotes a lot of space to the topic of love. She discusses the aspects of conjugal love - lust, romantic love and companionship - and the commonalities between conjugal love and love for children. She is very strong in describing her own feelings about her children and grandchildren, but does not make it as convincing of a case for people in general. My own sense is that love and affection are parts of temperament that vary from population to population as well as from person to person, and that she may be overgeneralizing from her own experience and her own culture.

To wrap up, this is an important book on a theme that deserves more attention than it gets. Gopnik is right on the big points, and is open enough as a scientist and intellectual to consider alternative points of view. She is what a scientist should be, and she is also a very readable and entertaining author. Five stars.

Great read even if you aren't raising children

Thoughtful book, clearly talking about how children explore and learn. We don't shape children (the carpenter) but provide the environment (gardener) that supports them as they develop the tools to flourish in the future, unpredictable world. The author also writes about society, caregiving, and aging. I'm not directly involved with children, or grandchildren, yet I found this a fascinating book to read. I highly recommend it.

A new book that is a significant achievement

This is an excellent book, one that has implications not only for caregivers but also for school boards, teachers, parks departments. Gopnik's writing is clear, accessible, and witty. She supports all of her conclusions with strong and recent data. Many people who work with children and spaces for children have been hoping for a long time that a scientist would write a book like this.

That's the long and that's the short of it

This is a competent and thorough bio, well researched, full of great trivia. Not quite sure if the song interpretations are the author's own or from the band members, though since most everything else seems well documented, I suppose she had some valid reference for the song meanings too. I appreciated the mention of Molko's side projects, many of which I was never aware of, and most of which are available to view on YouTube. I did appreciate the mature attempt at insight into the facts and events in Molko's life and the proliferation of quotes throughout. Enjoyable and kept my interest overall. I would recommend it to fill in the gaps or as a first exposure to Placebo.

Amazing book on the beloved Placebo frontman Brian Molko and his rise from outcast to rockstar.

I've been a long time fan of Brian Molko and Placebo since the debut album and am always looking for more things to add to my collection. I was really excited to find this book and ordered it straight away. It's actually a really nice book, bigger than I had thought with a really nice glossy cover and definitely full of details on Brian and the band's rise to fame. Starting out from the years prior to the band meeting and forming the band, it gives you some insight on them as people (mainly Brian) and how it all began with so much little known information. I am very pleased with this book and haven't been able to put the book down since it's arrival. I'm almost finished with it and it hasn't even been 48 hours. This just shows that it has managed to keep my attention which is a hard task to do. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is a fan of Brian and Placebo.

A HOME Bartenders Guide to Making Cocktails like a Pro

At last, a book for the HOME Bartender! This is an excellent resource if you enjoy making cocktails at home and being your own host.

The 12 Bottles include 8 Liquors, 2 Vermouths and 2 Bitters and covers drinks with 1 Bottle (Pick Your Poision), 3 Bottles (Adding Bitters & Vermouth) and 4 Bottles (Orange Liqueur). Ice (otherwise known as Cocktail Ice) gets it's own several page section and is well worth the read. My favorite section is The Bottles. Everything you could possible want to know about each of the 12 is listed in its own section with complimentary recipes! It'll give you a new appreciation for each of them.

The books ends with Putting It All Together which includes some expanded, new virgin drinks instead of the typical ones you tend to find in bartender guides and drink books. No Shirley Temple in this one! Beer, Wine & Cider has found a place among this section as well as finishing off with Garnishs, Syrups and Liqueurs which includes a wonderful Cherry Syrup recipe.

This is the best book I've come across for people who want a ...

This is the best book I've come across for people who want a good drink at home. For people who like a cocktail. For people who like food and don't make cocktails because so many home attempts are terrible (and so many restaurants/bars are about as bad). It's terrific for entertaining, from a few friends to a lot, but it's really helpful for anyone who wants to enjoy a good drink.

Covers a lot

Covering the whole range of StudioLive mixers packs this manual with more info than any one user needs, but it isn't too hard to find the right pieces. Even so, I wish it could have been produced in separate editions focused on individual models.

I bought this book because it was sold as a book for all of the Studiolive mixers, however I was disappointed that my mixer the 16.0.2 was not given as extensive instruction as the larger mixers. If you have the Presonus AI it is probably worth getting.

Outstanding book, Bobby does it again!! This book takes you well beyond the PreSonus StudioLive manual. It's very well written and gives you actual real life scenarios on how to use this great piece of gear. He explains every section of the mixer in great detail, but doesn't stop there. He goes on to show you how to set it up and use it for live, or in the studio; with in depth explanations. You'll see that the setup for live is completely different than studio usage and he shows you exactly how to use it for both with examples. Overall a must have book if you own a PreSonus StudioLive or StudioLiveAI!!!

A very educational book that is not only for teachers but for parents and leaders too!

Let me start off by stating that I am not a teacher by trade. I also do not work in that profession at all. What I am is a businessman. I am also a father.

I became very interested in this book after reading the description and after spending some time in my daughter's first grade classroom. We live in a small down in PA which is very diverse. I wouldn't say it is a poor town but it is on the lower end of some of the surrounding towns for sure. While volunteering in my daughter's class I was able to clearly see the struggles that some kids face and the burden that is placed on teachers whose job it is to not only educate but also to be a mentor for each and every kid in that class. Keep in mind that each child is from a different upbringing with different levels of struggles. This book helps increase the level of appreciation even greater than I already have for the teachers in this world and the weight that we place on their shoulders. They truly are a god send to the children who have no where else to turn.

This book has helped me identify some things to look out for and be aware of when it comes to helping raise my children as well as be aware of ways that I may be able to help other children in the community. I can be more understanding of the differences in the children my kids become friends with and even keep in mind some of the points that the author discusses to hopefully avoid frustration in the future. This book has also motivated me to try to play a bigger role in the education field when I have time. Things like mentoring and volunteering my time to help the educators and children is something that not only makes me feel better but I can also see the results of my efforts on the children's faces that I help.

I also feel that this book has helped me on a professional level as well. By understanding the upbringing of children, it also helps understand some of the behaviors of adults. Every adult was a child once and if they had to deal with certain struggles while growing up it will definitely have an impact on them and their actions as an adult. Since reading this book I have tried to take a step back and really pay attention to the actions of my coworkers as well as customers. Before getting frustrated because of differences I try to think about what the person might have gone through in the past and why we may be seeing things differently. I think this has made me a better person as well as a better leader professionally.

My only gripe about this book though is I wish there were more examples of things that students shared with their teachers. More real life examples so that we could be even more prepared to assist or identify when areas of concern are discovered. I took a star off of my rating for this because I truly believe that those types of examples and how they were handled would have made a much greater impact on the readers.

This book was educational, yet, not what I was hoping for. Doesn't share enough "Dear Teacher..." comments that I was hoping for. I don't think I would have purchased it if I had known.
