Great Value - Beautiful Bible

This is the dark red leather bible. The leather is nice and thick and appears it will be very durable. Has a little more shine to it than I would like. The pages are guilded in gold which looks good, and it is thumb indexed, which I was looking for. None of my other Bibles have this feature. I realize I should have the books of the bible memorized, but at times I find it hard to find some of the old testament books.

This is my first NASB translation, and I think I will really enjoy it. I did lots of research about the accuracy on other translations prior to making this purchase, and this translation ranks very high with most biblical authorities. It is also the translation our pastor frequently reads from.

The reference materials seem very sound, and are very helpful. There are not as many references and comments as with the Life Application Bibles, however this is a smaller Bible, and much easier to carry around, so you lose some of the bulk.

Here are the Pros and Cons for me, I realize this is subjective.

Pros:
-Solid NASB Translation
-Moderate size
-Heavy Leather
-Thumb Indexed
-Sound & adequate reference materials
-Smyth sewn binding - lays flat
-Nice clear font - easy to read
-Several large full color maps
-nice in-text black and white maps to assist you in your study

Cons:
-Leather too shiney
-Red letter New Testament - I prefer not to have red lettering
-Amazon does not provide Monogramming
-Only one ribbon marker. Some have two which is nice
-Family Record - Marriage Page - wasted space in a Bible for me, I would rather have a personal notes page.

Continued Tradition of Excellence

The Scofield study notes may be a bit dated, but I still find them useful. Updatings of the style and presentation of notes, comments, and other features are positive. The NASB is not my favorite for reading, but it is still among the most accurate and the first I turn to for alternative reading and clarification. Also, it refrains from the recent trend towards "gender neutrality" and other forms of political correctness. It puts accuracy first and lets the reader go from there.

Altogether an excellent reference work.

Beautiful, But Not a Good Study Bible

At the outset, recognize that different readers want different Bibles. E.g., a reader may want a coffee-table Bible, a devotional Bible, or a study Bible. The reader may want a Bible that gives the interpretation of a passage (regardless of the passage's literal language); or, the reader may want the Bible to translate the language from Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic accurately, and to make up his or her own mind about the passage's meaning. One reader may be distressed if language favors the male gender; another reader may be distressed if the publisher changes the Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic canon text to make language more gender-neutral.

This review assumes the reader wants an Updated NASB Bible. The Updated NASB Bible: (i) translates the language from Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic literally; and (ii) follows the canon text with respect to gender. If the reader wants a Bible that gives a passage's interpretation, rather than the passage's literal translation, that reader may be happier with a Message Bible (or similar Bible), which gives a modern paraphrase of the literal translation. If the reader wants gender-neutral language, the reader may be happier with a New Revised Standard Version, which uses inclusive pronouns.

First, the pluses of the Scofield Updated NASB Study Bible.

This Bible is beautiful. The leather is of excellent quality. The gold leaf is flawless. The pages are neatly-arranged, and the arrangement renders the Bible very user-friendly. The print is somewhat larger than the print of competing study Bibles, making the Scofield Bible more convenient for those with poor eyesight.

Second, the minuses.

Where New Testament language quotes a passage from the Old Testament, the NASB translation emphasizes the reference by using a different typeface: small capitalized letters. This is an excellent feature. However, inexplicably, Scofield rarely identifies the Old Testament passage that is being quoted. The reader is left frustrated, knowing that the small-caps language quotes an Old Testament passage, but with no convenient way to locate the passage being quoted (forcing the reader to do what I am doing: have both a Scofield Study Bible and a Zondervan Study Bible in front of him or her, and read the two together-a time-consuming, bulky, and expensive method that calls into question the rationale for buying the Scofield Bible in the first place).

Also, the quality of Scofield's footnotes varies wildly. I bought the Scofield Bible because I compared its notes on one particular topic with the notes of competing Bibles, and found Scofield's notes to be more helpful than the others. I assumed that Scofield's superiority on that one topic would carry through the rest of the Scofield Bible.

That assumption was incorrect.

Some text that desperately needs extensive footnoting has little or none (which is probably how Scofield could produce a study Bible about the same size as a comparable Zondervan Study Bible but with larger print). As one example, Scofield has four notes in Mark explaining the Olivet Discourse; Zondervan has 29.

Some notes are poorly-written. As one example, the note describing Judas Iscariot in connection with Matthew 26:14 says Judas was "One of the twelve disciples of Jesus who betrayed Him." The note implies that there were more than 12 disciples, 12 disciples betrayed Jesus, and Judas was one of the 12 who betrayed Him. The note should read (simply to be grammatically correct, and without regard to the additional information the note would need in order to be more nearly accurate and complete), "One of the 12 disciples of Jesus; the disciple who betrayed Him."

Some footnotes contain interpretations that are simply incorrect. As one example, recall the Parable of the Landowner. In that parable, a landowner walls off his property, installs a grape press, and leases the property to vine-growers. The landowner sends a slave to collect the rents; the vine-growers beat him and send him on his way, empty-handed. The same scene is repeated multiple times; the vine-growers beat some of the slaves, and kill others. Finally, the landowner sends his son. The vine-growers kill the son. Plainly, the landowner in the parable is God. The slaves are the Old Testament prophets and John the Baptist. The landowner's son is Jesus. The vine-growers are the Pharisees (and presumably the Sadducees and Herodians). But, the note to Mark 12:1 maintains that "the vine-growers . . . are the O.T. prophets and John the Baptist." I.e., according to the note, the Old Testament prophets and John the Baptist-not the Pharisees (and Sadducees and Herodians)-persecuted Jesus and caused him to be crucified.

Scofield's sloppiness and errors, such as those described in the examples above, render its notes on less-clear parables, discourses, and other material highly suspect.

In short, while the Scofield Updated NASB Study Bible may have some usefulness in one's library, and is certainly beautiful, the serious student would be better off buying a Bible with better references, more notes, and better note scholarship.

Digesting the Dharma

Written as a sequel to 'The Three Pillars of Zen,' which has established itself as a classic source of Zen instruction for Caucasian people - in half a dozen languages, this book illustrates something of the 'digestive process' involved, as Westerners endeavour to translate the meaning of Zen into - and out of - their own experience, practicing in a cultural milieu different to that in which Zen developed - in its Asian home.

The key parts of this book comprises a series of perspectives and summary remarks conveyed by Western practitioners - close to Philip Kapleau, and Kapleau's responses -fleshed out with succinct and frequently witty obervations.

Inevitably perhaps, what we find in this book differs quite considerably from the atmosphere found in the 'Three Pillars of Zen.' In the latter, people were immersing themselves in Zen practice and to that extent, 'turning back' their minds - away from the play of surface distinctions, in quest of some deep, underlying truth. The present work explores the interface between such Zen-based insight, and the spiritual challenges and practical demands of life in the crucible of contemporary Western experience.

As such, the issues raised in this book will touch almost everyone who has endeavoured to make sense of Zen in the context of Western society - with all of its virtues and vices. Inevitably, the need for a socially 'engaged Buddhism' comes to the fore, especially where peace issues and environmental issues are at stake. In this respect, Western Zen is likely to play a role considerably more 'radical than that of its 'conservative' Asian counterpart. Such topics have been given thoughtful consideration in this book, and they will prove stimulating to many Western Buddhists.

My only reservations about this book, concerned isolated observations which seemed at odds with the otherwise positive agenda set forth in the rest of the text. Zen should have a role in the workplace. Albert Low has articulated some imaginative and constructive views on this topic (he also wrote the preface to this book). However, in isolated places, such ideas begin to make Zen look like the means to some other end - the servant, rather than the master, in the situation. Such dangers fell into even sharper relief, with a stray comment from some of Kapleau's Japanese friends, hinting that Zen was the 'secret' behind Japan's industrial and commercial success.

I'm afraid that this struck the reviewer as a 'sell-out' to big-business and corporate Japan. There are indeed special Za-zen kai and pep-talks in some Japanese companies, but their emphasis is not upon the well being of the workers, but upon maintaining corporate profits. Japanese is the only language in the world with a special term for 'death from over-work' (karoshi), the levels of stress experienced in the Japanese work place, well nigh crucifying. Again, while Japanese culture is noted for its sensitivity to the forces of nature and the play of the seasons, Japan has some of the worst pollution and environmental problems in the developed world. Hence, if 'Zen' is greasing this machine - well, maybe it ought not to be. Brian Victoria (cf. Zen at War) has averred that 'Industrial Zen' is but a variant of 'Imperial way Buddhism' - and no respecter of persons. In this context, Zen is at once sedative, and stimulant, like the double-sided pills handed out by modern doctors.

To end on a positive note, the reviewer feels honour bound to point out that - when confronting Kapleau Roshi over such matters, many years ago - Roshi was utterly honest, declaring that he had begun to feel similar misgivings about 'corporate Zen,' both as regards the well-being of individuals - and environmental concerns, suggesting that these ideas might be reworked at a later juncture. Though I have yet to confirm it, I suspect that such matters were restated in 'Zen; the Merging of East and West.'

About the Author

Stephen P. Robbins received his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. He previously worked for Shell Oil Company and Reynolds Metals Company and has taught at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Concordia University in Montreal, the University of Baltimore, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, and San Diego State University. Dr. Robbins also participates in masters track competition. Since turning 50 in 1993, he’s won 23 national championships and 14 world titles. He was inducted into the U.S. Masters Track & Field Hall of Fame in 2005.

Mary Coulter (Ph.D., University of Arkansas) held different jobs including high school teacher, legal assistant, and city government program planner before completing her graduate work. She has taught at Drury University, the University of Arkansas, Trinity University, and Missouri State University. She is currently professor emeritus of management at Missouri State University. In addition to Fundamentals of Management, Dr. Coulter has published other books with Pearson including Management (with Stephen P. Robbins), Strategic Management in Action, and Entrepreneurship in Action.

David A. Decenzo (Ph.D., West Virginia University) is president of Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina. He has been at Coastal since 2002 when he took over leadership of the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business. As president, Dr. DeCenzo has implemented a comprehensive strategic planning process, ensured fiscal accountability through policy and practice, and promoted assessment and transparency throughout the University. Before joining the Coastal faculty in 2002, he served as director of partnership development in the College of Business and Economics at Towson University in Maryland. He is an experienced industry consultant, corporate trainer, public speaker, and board member. Dr. DeCenzo is the author of numerous textbooks that are used widely at colleges and universities throughout the United States and the world. Dr. DeCenzo and his wife, Terri, have four children: Mark, Meredith, Gabriella, and Natalie, and reside in Pawleys Island, South Carolina.

Not an earth shattering read on the topic

This book did not really add any value to my studies on the topic of management or business in general. I've read leadership books, economic books, organisational behaviour books, etc that covered in more depth the topics of this book. This book really takes the definition of management in a broad sense and includes many topics other authors (and I) consider to be leadership, not management, topics. It's written at a very easy to read level however. Having read the book there is not one specific audience I would recommend it to. It is definitely not a focused or in-depth study and only grazes the surface of topics. Therefore it is not enough for anyone looking to implement any serious behaviour or management practices. It would only be good for someone wanting the basics in overview/summary form. Even for that need, there are other books I would recommend first. While this book technically is a textbook I would say it is very close to being a book for lay people interested in management or maybe for employees thinking of applying for some management roles. The MyManagementLab software/website is of even worse value. The simulations are written for high school level at best. The answers to them are at times overly obvious and really do not aid in the learning process. If you buy the book, go for a version without the website. You are not missing out the website and saving yourself money (a $40 value if purchased alone).

Weak effort that should be left in the past.

As a graduate textbook, this volume lacks the necessary depth to challenge students. Worse yet, this book may only be downloaded onto two devices, rendering it much less useful in the publisher's attempt to force students to purchase or rent multiple copies. I'm all for purchasing something that's worth the price, but once I purchase that item, I should be allowed to do with it as I please on my own devices, no matter how many I have registered. Robbins, et. al. need to convince their publisher to join us in the 21st century in their approach to business.

mispellings? otherwise, good product

I am taking an Entrepreneur class, and was assigned this book. The content is good, and does a great job of providing accurate, helpful information. However, there is so many spelling error, weird ones with extra hyphens in words that really don't need them. I'm in the U.S., and checked the publishing location; maybe it's from the U.K. - I know we spell some words differently than the Brits. Nope, published in the USA. And the authors were even American. It makes me wonder who copy edited this; they shouldn't have been paid. Otherwise good book, but errors are an eyesore.

Perfect

My 2 year old loves head and shoulders. Since I am trying to start teaching her Arabic I thought this would be the perfect book and it is. As a novice in Arabic this book is easy to read. The quality is great, I love that it is a board-book(nice and indestructible), the pages are glossy and the pictures adorable. I am very glad I purchased this book. I hope the author and publishers make similar books in the future.

About the Author

Josh Golding (Goldrush Films) has been a producer, story editor and script consultant for twenty years, working for Hollywood companies such as the Samuel Goldwyn Company and MGM/Pathe, and extensively for the BBC in the UK for whom he has produced two films, and developed numerous tv dramas and features. He is currently an Associate Lecturer in screenwriting at Central St. Martin's College, where he has devised a beginners and intermediate programme. He teaches regular advanced seminars independently, as well as consulting widely for independent production companies.

Cleverly explained advanced screenwriting concepts

This book approaches screenwriting from another angle. If films like Memento, Groundhog Day, Pulp Fiction or The Truman Show are your kind of films, then do yourself a favor a have a read at it. It instructs stuff that i've, personally, didn't read in no other screenwriting book and i read quite a lot and found them all usefull. Some stuff, i must admit, is quite hard to digest at a first read but it starts to fall into place from further re-reading.

I didn't buy my copy from Amazon tho but from BFI Filmstore in London and i'm quite amazed frankly that there's no reviews on Amazon yet.

E. Nesbit's "The Hursts of Hurstcote" is only one of the many stories found in The Oxford Book of Gothic Tales, the first anthology of this spinetingling genre. Though Gothic fiction has generally been identified with Walpole's"Castle of Otranto" and the works of Ann Radcliffe, these thirty-seven selections compiled by Chris Baldick provide a unique look at the genre's development into its present-day forms. We see standard gothic elements of incest, murder, and greed in "The Poisoner of Montremos," a late eighteenth-century story by Richard Cumberland. We find in Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher" the tale that set a new standard of decadence for Gothic stories. In Hawthorne's "Rappacini's Daughter," a young girl is raised on the very essence of poison. In Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily," a woman's death satisfies a neighborhood's curiosity with a bizarre discovery. In other tales, a ghost reveals his sin of parricide, madness drives a man to murder,and a young girl spends her lifetime locked in a single room. All these stories and more contain the common elements of the gothic tale: a warped sense of time, a claustrophobic setting, a link to archaic modes of thought, dynastic corruption, and the impression of a descent into disintegration. Yet they also reveal the progression of the genre from stories of feudal villains amid crumbling ruins to a greater level of sophistication in which writers brought the gothic tale out of its medieval setting, and placed it in the contemporary world.

Some I've already read elsewhere, but the new ones to me were riveting! Great gothic collection!

I wanted to combine a good gothic book with the gothic romance I intended to read and had been on my TBR pile for a while and found this collection at a bookstore. The Oxford Book of Gothic Tales has a large collection stories by authors from times that vary from Georgian period to recent years. Some are dark and sinister, others have a mystery to discover while there are those that have only the gothic atmosphere down pat. There are quite a few popular authors here -- William Faulkner, Edgar Allan Poe, Angela Carter and Joyce Carol Oates, to name a few. There are also some stories written by "Anonymous." My favorite stories are "The Lady of the House of Love," by Angela Carter, Eden Glasgow's "Jordan's End," and Ray Russell's "Sardonicus." The stories are quite dark and are some of the best in the gothic genre. I've already read some of the stories from the authors I've enjoyed over the years (like Poe and Oates), but the ones I hadn't read made this a very enjoyable read for me. I cannot recommend this unique collection enough.

Views of the Dark Side

This is a wonderful anthology, giving a full historical spectrum of Gothic tales from silly early ones to chilling modern ones. I've used this as a textbook in two courses I teach in college, and students have been both amused (at blatantly Freudian overtones in 18th century stories) and horrified (especially at Pizarnek's account of Erzebet Bathory's perversions). My favorites are Carter's "Lady of the House of Love" and Cowles' "The Vampire of Kaldenstein," both of which combine eerieness with ironic humor.

Worthwhile Reading

This is a very interesting collection of literature. It includes writing from the late 1700s extending to the present. What makes this collection so amazing is that it not only includes stories from Poe, Lovecraft, and Hawthorne, but it also has stories taken from periodicals and anthologies long out of print. You'd never find some of this writing anywhere else, and it is truly amazing.
All of the stories do have somewhat of a dark and twisted theme, but they are all very rich.
If seriously considering this book, I highly recommend purchasing it in a hardback edition. It will last you much longer, and you'll be glad for this after reading it.

Jeremy McCarter wrote cultural criticism for New York magazine and Newsweek before spending five years on the artistic staff of the Public Theater, where he created, directed, and produced the Public Forum series. He served on the jury of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and is writing a book about young American radicals during World War One. He lives in Chicago.

Lin-Manuel Miranda (Book, Music, and Lyrics/Alexander Hamilton) is the Tony and Grammy award-winning composer-lyricist-star of Broadway's In the Heights--winner of four 2008 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Orchestrations, and Best Choreography with Miranda receiving the award for Best Score. Additionally, he is the co-composer and co-lyricist of Broadway's Tony-nominated Bring It On: The Musical and provided Spanish translations for the 2009 Broadway revival of West Side Story. Miranda, along with Tom Kitt, won the 2014 Creative Arts Emmy for Best Original Music and Lyrics for their work on the 67th Annual Tony Awards. In 2015, Miranda was named as a Fellow of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. He lives with his family in New York City.

How lucky we are to be alive right now

Let's just accept it...when Lin-Manuel Miranda does something, he does it right, all the way, and maybe better than anyone else.

I'm fortunate enough to have seen "Hamilton" twice. I've read the Chernow biography, listened to the cast recording non-stop (ha) since September, and been an avid follower of Lin's tweets, Facebook posts, interviews, #Ham4Ham shows, and Genius annotations. I've been a musical theatre geek for five decades and have never felt this excitement about any show (with the possible exception of A Chorus Line). So when I heard months ago that Lin and former New York magazine drama critic Jeremy McCarter were putting together a book about the creation of "Hamilton," I pre-ordered my copy and started counting the days. Now it's here, and.... wow. Just wow.

Given the show's deserved status as a cultural phenomenon that will be playing to sold-out houses for years, it would have been easy to just throw together a "behind-the-scenes" book with a few interviews, toss in some publicity stills, and have a guaranteed best-seller. This "Hamiltome" couldn't be further from that. Among other delights, it includes: the full libretto of this sung-through (and rapped-through) show, with extensive annotations from LMM that give new insights, meaning, and historical context to the words that you might already know by heart; more than 30 essays about the cast members, the production team, the creative process, and the facts of Hamilton's life; copies of relevant historical documents referenced in the show; pages from LMM's notebooks with early drafts and outlines; and a stunningly beautiful array of production photographs, cast portraits, and backstage candids. And all of this is thoughtfully organized and packaged in a beautifully bound volume with ivory deckle-edged paper - a book like books used to be. (Trust me, this is one book you don't want to read on Kindle; it's actually a sensory experience to hold it and turn the pages.)

As McCarter notes in the Introduction, the title "Hamilton - The Revolution" has two meanings. There is the American Revolution that is brought to life in this show, and there is the revolution of the show itself - "a musical that changes the way that Broadway sounds, that alters who gets to tell the story of our founding, that lets us glimpse the new, more diverse America rushing our way." Do what you can to see "Hamilton," either on Broadway or when it comes to your town. It's unlike anything else. Until then, this book and the original cast recording will get you as close as possible to an orchestra seat at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

A stunning creation, but I knew that before I even saw it...

This book is a thing of beauty! I ordered it early and it - literally - just arrived at my front door. Giddy with excitement, I pulled back the packaging tab and inside was this glorious tome. The design is exquisite, the words flow as beautifully as the pictures from page to page: lyrics, insights and anecdotes galore - nothing has been overlooked. To be truthful, I came back to Amazon to order another as a gift, but there don't seem to be any available. So glad I ordered early! Looking forward to enveloping myself in this Hamilton word and pictures story, that is until I actually get to see the show... A girl can dream :-)

Edited to add: and the dream is almost a reality... Used this gorgeous book to deliver surprise tickets to my niece who turned 18 today. I'm in New York and tonight's the night! AND, Miranda wins the Pulitzer on the same day. It's been a bit of a day!!!

I used this as my sole source to study for the CIMA. It contains many practical ideas and concepts that can also be implemented in an advisory practice. A bit pricey, but that's part of the textbook racket, and the reason for 4 stars.

I noticed some issues with the text and called the Publisher about them. I was suppose to hear back within 24 hours .I never did.
If you ignore the missing referenced tables I called about, the text is Good.
