About the Author
STEPHEN GROSZ was born in Indiana and educated at Berkeley and Oxford. A wonderful and compassionate book

A wonderful and compassionate book. The author, a psychoanalyst, captures the humanity of working with people to help them relieve their suffering. He is a true "mensch" and writes with warmth and a respect for the people he treats. As a psychotherapist myself, I was moved and - in the chapter about his father - brought to tears.

This unusual book is best read slowly and carefully.

This is one of those rare instances in which I have to say that many of the 1- and 2-star reviews are as accurate as the 5-star ones. The main difficulty is expectations. The Examined Life is, at a superficial level, a series of shared experiences from the author's casebook, suitably anonymized, but it differs from the more traditional collections of essays by practitioners (Oliver Sacks, Atul Gawande, or, reaching back decades, William Nolen) in being less structured, more focused on a specific insight that the reader is left to ponder, very possibly with ramifications for his own life. Each of the chapters or sections is short; most are incomplete in the sense that they only touch on an individual patient's life without even giving an account of the arc of his treatment. They are like epiphanies distilled from case studies, tantalizingly brief but written with extraordinary lucidity and sensitivity. They are as good as many short stories in this sense, not by being obscure but by rewarding multiple readings. If you are expecting detailed accounts of a patient's life, followed by a description of diagnosis and treatment, you will likely be disappointed. But if you are willing to entertain the possibility that patient case histories can be used as a starting point for an experienced therapist's reflection, insight, and wisdom, you should not feel misled.

Comments on 'closure' especially appreciated!

I saw this book in the stores while on a visit to London last year. Took me all this time to order it (last week) on my Kindle. Happily was anything bit disappointed. What I specially liked is the memoir approach and how the author weaves together stories of his patients with his own story. That he is willing to show his own vulnerabilities and that he also needs to figure some things out makes him human and deeply authentic. For example, when he takes his dad on a journey into the past. Lots of food for thought on the unpredictability and complexities of life. One thing I specially appreciated is his chapter on grieving and "closure." I think, every time I see the word bandied about, how preposterous it is. He's the first person I've seen actually write about this and make the point that life doesn't work like that. Very worthwhile and thoughtful little book that was a pleasure to read.

Great teacher helper

I read Silko's CEREMONY for the first time a year ago and began considering teaching it for my AP students. When I happened upon this Casebook, I bought it before even reading any reviews, knowing it would benefit us by exposing us to several different perspectives. And it has. The introduction is helpful in that it briefly outlines each of the essays in the book. I was a bit taken back when the author reveals that CEREMONY was once thought to be too difficult even for college students, but I felt that my high school students need to be exposed to this beautiful piece of literature, and this book has made the journey much easier. I have only shared some of the ideas expressed so far. Paula Gunn Allen's "Special Problems in Teaching Leslie Marmon Silko's CEREMONY" informed us non-Native Americans that some consider Silko's use of their stories objectionable. We gain much insight into the Native culture that helps us apprieciate even more the power and beauty of her book. Buy this now even if you aren't teaching the book. You might learn something, and maybe even change your perspective on it.

About the Author
RUSSELL KIRK (1918-1994), historian of ideas, critic, essayist, editor, and novelist, was the author of thirty-two books. Among them are The Roots of American Order, The Politics of Prudence, Enemies of the Permanent Things, and six works of fiction. He received twelve honorary doctorates from American universities and many awards, including the Presidential Citizens Medal.

A Conservative Pantheon

The book is a sort of intellectual history, each chapter summarizing the thought of one to three conservative thinkers, more or less chronologically beginning with Edmund Burke and running through poets of the mid twentieth century (T.S. Eliot and Robert Frost, among others). The thinkers discussed include intellectuals, clergymen, politicians and poets, all thinking, working and writing in the Anglo-American sphere (most are in fact British or American, but the exceptions -- Tocqueville and Santayana -- wrote in America or for American audiences). A good working knowledge of British and American history from the French Revolution through World War II is therefore a helpful prerequisite to understanding many of these thinkers.
The summaries are interesting and informative as description. Many of them (the chapters on Burke and John Adams, for instance, or the section on John Henry Newman) make great introductions to figures whose work can't be read in comprehensive political treatises and many provide intriguing introductions to writers you have probably never heard of (Sir James Fitzjames Stephen) or to the thought of people whom you don't know as political thinkers (say, John Randolph or Arthur Balfour).
Among the wealth of description, a little prescription creeps in. Kirk's heroes don't "argue" -- they "know," they "perceive," they "realize," they "understand." Kirk is highly sympathetic with the ideas he summarizes, and it is no coincidence that his final chapter, on twentieth century poets, is called "Conservatives' Promise" and contains some of the most hopeful writing in the book. "If men of affairs can rise to the summons of the poets," he writes, "the norms of culture and politics may endure despite the follies of the time." He ends upbeat, with a call to action of sorts.
Not to be missed is Kirk's first chapter, "The Idea of Conservatism," in which he spells out the fundamental tenets which unite the belief of the writers whose work he describes, as well as their photographic negative, the tenets of radicalism.
The book dovetails perfectly with George Nash's _The Conservative Intellectual Movement in American after 1945_, which, of course, begins with Kirk himself and which carries on a similar discussion (though Nash omits from his narrative the British half and focuses on intellectual figures, to the exclusion of practical politicians like, say, Goldwater).

This widely embraced overview of the history of conservativism gives readers a peek into the thoughts of the main conservative thinkers who have significantly influenced its contemporary form. Alexis de Tocqueville said that, "The surface of American society is covered with a layer of democratic paint, but from time to time one can see the old aristocratic colours breaking through." Kirk shows us the pallet to which de Tocqueville is referring.

The Stupid Party

This book has been a major inspiration to me and my way of thinking. It is not very difficult to go online and read any number of Conservatives talking about all of the issues of the day. But, this book stands alone in following and celebrating the history of Conservative intellectuals. Often times it is portrayed (not without some merit) that Conservatives are anti-intellectual. I have frequently heard that Liberals are just naturally smarter or more inclined to be an intellectual. But, The Conservative Mind blows a hole through all of that. Kirk examines major Conservative thinkers like: Edmund Burke, John Adams, George Canning, Benjamin Disraeli, John Randolph of Roanoke, Orestes Brownson, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, John C. Calhoun, and T. S Eliot (amung many many others).

The most difficult aspect of this book is to accept John Randolph and John Calhoun as figures to be celebrated. They both were men who used their talents to protect an evil system of slavery. Although, as another reviewer elquently noted, Kirk was not endnorsing slavery or racism or anything like that. Just the fact that Conservatism is a The "negation of ideology," and that change will happen, in Kirk's prospective Calhoun was only following that line of thinking. I personally don't agree with it that far. As obviously slavery was antithesis of what the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution stand for. But, again stating, Kirk is not writing to argue that slavery should not have been eliminated- only that change has to follow the methods of that society.

I would recommend this to anyone- Conservative or Liberal. It is a magifnicent study of Conservativism. It can be a little dense at times, but that is to be expected and it shouldn't detour anyone from reading it.

This type of processing-structure-property correlation opens up many new possi� bilities for innovative applications; for example, the production of stiff fibre composites and blends having anisotropic transport properties, such as novel membranes. The beautiful contessa.

Lovely Ava! Lee Server pulled no punches when he researched for this biography; he reveals Ava's turmoils, trials, pains and addictions but doesn't overlook her gregariousness, generosity and sweetness. Mr. Server must have spent hours and hours interviewing the people who knew Ava best.
If you have a soft spot in your heart for the disservice paid to her when she was denied the right to sing those lovely tunes in Show Boat, you'll appreciate the fact that she did get to sing them to our troops. You can also hear her sing them on You Tube, much better than the 'hired' singer that did the voice over.
Ava was much underrated as an actress. Perhaps she might have not had such a turbulent personal life if she had been given better roles, though the parts she did play were done beautifully. She was a much loved lady by all those, men and women alike, who worked with her. T
This is a well written biography. Kudos to Lee Server.

This reviewer was already familiar with author Server's work, having read "Baby, I Don't Care"-the bio of Robert Mitchum. The view from here was that RM was such a negative character that the story generated little interest. But Ava Gardner is the polar opposite, as is her bio. One warms to her personality almost immediately. AG is portrayed as a humane and true- to- life person throughout. Her career had its ups and downs but the tone of LIN is consistently positive. "Love is Nothing" faithfully follows the turbulent, zesty, even hedonistic life of the late actress in virtual chronological order. The lady danced on a few tables in her life! It offers a virtual kaleidoscope of Hollywood of the 40s through the 80s. AG appeared in some 70 films in that span, some unaccredited. The pages are filed with gossip and tidbits. Stars, lovers, husbands, directors, studio heads, friends and producers fly by. Two names stood out to this reader. One was Frank Sinatra, who AG divorced but never completely disengaged from. The other is George C Scott, portrayed as simply a nut case. Maybe "Patton" was truer to life than many knew. One negative aspect of AG's life is the old studio system. MGM, it appears, did not serve Ava well. This review used the word "gossip" above but the reader should have confidence in what s (he) reads. Author Server includes 33 pages offend notes and bibliography. This reviewer has always been curious about AG's role -if any- in helping Frank Sinatra land his key role in "From Here to Eternity". Server's exclusion leads one to suspect that AG had no part. "Love is Nothing" is fully recommended to readers desiring an accurate look at the old the studio dominated star system that is gone forever.

Beautiful and self destructive woman

Really enjoyed this book, found it well written and well researched. She was lovely woman to look at, but she destroyed herself with her excesses and probably destroyed others in the process.
The book should have been called 'Destroying Beauty'. I don't think she really thought love was nothing, I think she must have thought it was everything and aside from her time with Sinatra, she never quite found it. She turned to booze for solace like so many others have, before and since.
