Best book I've come across so far for LED lights, and hydro/aqua/aeroponic growing

I bought this book specifically to better understand LED grow lights and its well worth every penny. I've read a couple of truly mediocre books on hydroponics so far and for the low price of this book, I was skeptical at first. I'm happy to say that I found this book truly useful. I know know what to look for when purchasing and LED grow light. The author goes over the specific color frequencies, and ratios of those color frequencies needed to make a good grow light. The author is up-front in saying that more data is needed before anyone can claim to make the perfect grow light, but the biology of most plants require some fairly basic combinations of colors/frequencies.
Aside from the insight gained on LED lights specifically, I also learned a lot about planning my grow room, including how to ensure that my equipment does not strain my existing circuitry, light control, etc. As a novice to hydro/aeroponics, I found this book to have tremendous value. I'll keep it on my digital bookshelf for many months to come. As it turns out, the first grow light I purchased on Amazon was well within the suggested lighting values recommended by this book. Dumb luck on my part, but good to know in hindsight that I made a lucky guess. Since then I have purchased that same grow light, plus a different one that incorporated UV and IR spectrums. If you are looking for usable advice for growing plants with LED lights, this is the book to get.

Good information on a relatively new lighting system.

Although he avoids mentioning it nearly entirely, this is about growing cannabis under LED lights. Not to worry, it still counts for food crops. Just ignore all the references to weird grow media and nutrient solutions and his advice will help with your tomatoes and such.

.I don't know when Mr Sloper wrote this - as opposed to when it was published - but good quality LEDs with 8-9 frequencies at 600w (but drawing about 300w) - use 3w not 5w bulb systems - are now available in the $150-200 range online. This really makes LEDs practical for small gardens.

Well worth reading, especially since there are so many misconceptions about this option.

Anyone already using or considering using LED grow lights should get this book. First substantial information I've come across about the fundamentals of using this type of lighting for indoor gardening. Very informative about all aspects! Well written!

Ensuring design leads to Joy in Life & Joy in Use

Karen Holtzblatt has been an admirably effective leader in developing and disseminating Contextual Design, and now her Second Edition strengthens her influence in the design community. She goes beyond user interface design and user experience design, raising the aspiration of readers to embrace Joy in Life (Accomplishment, Connection, Identity and Sensation). Holtzblatt also encourages designers to create products that bring Joy in Use, by which she means “fulfillment of core intents” in just a few actions, while being free of hassles.

These lofty goals can be realized by hard work in immersion experiences that give designers an intimate understanding of what users are trying to do and the rich circumstances in which they work or play. As she writes “immersion puts the team in the users’ shoes”, so that the team can make effective decisions and clever innovations. Contextual design is a validated set of methods that show how to gather the data that drives ideation, which leads to products that are fulfilling because they empower users and because they fit into the users’ larger ecosystem.

My only complaint is that I wanted more examples. The chapter on experience models has 20 large figures, but the affinity diagram chapter only had two.

In summary, this is a solid book, based on decades of experience in many commercial projects. It is realistic, while being inspirational. Get it, use it, and help make the world a better place by improved design.

Essential how-to guide for research and design

Almost 20 years ago, the first edition of this book was my primary "go-to" for practical advice on conducting user research and using the findings to generate design solutions.

The new edition is a complete revamp and addresses the key change that's occurred during that period; namely the ubiquitous nature of "technology as appendage".

The models presented are founded in empirical research and are specifically designed to support communication, immersion and interaction.

If you are serious about conducting research to design excellent products and services, this book is quite simply a "must-read". At almost 500 pages it's not a light read, but it will more than reward the effort.

Sidewalk Oracles: Don't walk the streets without it!

I'm reading the latest book written by Robert Moss. If you are familiar with Robert Moss and his writing, he needs no recommendation. His books on dreaming and awareness are among the most useful and poetic in print. If you are not familiar with Robert's work, while this is in certain respects quite different from his preceding works, it may well be as good a place as any to begin. In writing this book, he takes the reader beyond the realm of dreams to a realm in which the mechanisms of dreams intrude upon our waking consciousness.

"Sidewalk Oracles: Playing with Signs, Symbols, and Synchronicity in Everyday Life" is an encounter, written in Moss' characteristically engaging style, with the magical voice of the universe, the higher self, or that which gives us pause when we discover it, to consider that there is indeed an intelligence guiding or at least, nudging life along.

Moss encourages us to be open to the hints, those coincidences that occur in our lives, and teaches the reader how to incite them in everyday experience. Be careful though! This book will not only make you more sensitive to the whispering voice of synchronicity and coincidence, but it will make you wanting so much more of it!

making it a joy to read

Sidewalk Oracles introduces you to kairomancy and ends up showing you how the world is constantly speaking to us and guiding us if we are open to listening, to being led, and to dancing with the trickster a bit. Nearly every page seemed to conjure magic in my world, sparking my awareness of the speaking world we live in. Robert Moss brings both sage wisdom and light playfulness yet again in this new book, making it a joy to read. The "games" are fun and his personal tales are entertaining and inspiring. I highly recommend this book as well as his previous works on the arts and adventures of dreaming. Thank you Mr. Robert Moss!

The book also presents newly reconsidered theoretical material on dielectric breakdown by femtosecond laser pulses, allowing a better understanding of the differences between optical damage on surfaces and inside the bulk, as well as a look into the future.

About the Author
Hiroaki Misawa is Professor at the Research Institute for Electronic Science at Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan. He obtained his B.Sc. in Engineering from the Department of Engineering at Tokyo Metropolitan University in 1979, graduated in Engineering from the University of Tsukuba in 1981 and completed his Ph.D. at the Department of Chemistry there in 1984. After postdoctoral positions at the Universities of Texas and Tsukuba and an Assistant Professorship at Tsukuba, he joined the Micro-photo-conversion project (Exploratory Research for Advanced Technology ERATO of Japan Science & Technology Agency JST). He then moved on to the Department of Engineering at the University of Tokushima in 1993 and was promoted to full professor in 1995. His current research interests include photochemistry, light-matter interaction, ultra-fast processes in materials, photonic crystals, and plasmonics. He has authored more than 200 papers.

Saulius Juodkazis is Associate Professor at the Research Institute for Electronic Science at Hokkaido University, Japan. He received his Physics Diploma in 1986 from Vilnius University, Lithuania, and was later confered a lecturer qualification in Physical Sciences. In 1997, he received his Ph.D. in Physics and Material Science jointly from Vilnius University and l'Universit� laude Bernard in Lyon, France, on the structural and optical properties of CdS doped waveguiding sol-gel films. From 1994, he worked as a researcher at the Semiconductor Physics Department, currently Institute of Material Science and Applied Research, of Vilnius University, and from 1997 to 2000 carried out post-doctoral research at Tokushima University, Japan. His current interests include space-time-spectrum-resolved characterization of light-matter interactions in micro-domains, nano-photonics/plasmonics, laser tweezers, and applications of ultra-fast laser pulses. He has published and co-authored more than 90 scientific papers.

John Soane (1753-1837) was a difficult man, both personally and professionally; with what seemed to be sheer force of will and unyielding temperament, he surpassed his humble beginnings to advance in his career and social standing. Yet the philosophy of perception that imbued his reworkings of classical ideas and forms never materialized into a fully synthesized theory. In addition, many of his buildings have been demolished, leaving us with only watercolors by his assistant, John Gandy, to represent his work. Despite these challenges, Richardson and Stevens (Royal Acad. of Arts, London) have managed to organize the contents of the Soane Museum and essays from leaders in the study of Soane into a flowing and lavishly illustrated, seemingly comprehensive piece on the master. Soane is fully covered, from birth, through his lifelong work with the Royal Academy and his private and family difficulties, to his influence on later architects. Hinted at in the text are many possibilities for further research, making this a valuable tool for future scholars. This tour-de-force catalog for an exhibition at the Royal Academy is a smart choice for academic libraries or libraries specializing in art history or architecture.

British actor and comedian Hugh Laurie's first book is a spot-on spy spoof about hapless ex-soldier Thomas Lang, who is drawn unwittingly and unwillingly into the center of a dangerous James Bond-like plot of international terrorists, arms dealing, high-tech weapons, and CIA spooks. You may recall having seen Laurie in the English television series Jeeves and Wooster; Laurie played Bertie Wooster, the clutzy hero of the P.G. Wodehouse comic novels that originated those characters. The lineage from Wodehouse's Wooster to Laurie's Lang is clear, and, if you like Wodehouse, you'll probably love The Gun Seller.

YA. A delightful first novel by the British actor, comedian, and author of the television series "A Bit of Fry and Laurie." In this spoof (of sorts) of the spy genre, Laurie's appealing turns of phrase will grab readers from the first paragraph. Thomas Lang, formerly of the Scots Guard and currently a freelance bodyguard/man for hire, is offered an assassination job. He indignantly refuses, attempts to warn the victim, and is soon embroiled in undercover work for the British government, CIA operatives, arms dealers, and terrorists. Those who enjoy action or spy novels will be swept along in the events. Although somewhat convoluted, the plot is so punctuated with bursts of sly humor that readers won't mind a bit of confusion. The author pokes gentle, good-natured fun at the foibles and characteristics of British and Americans alike, as well as his hero, bureaucrats, terrorists, diplomats, and just about everyone else. In a tone reminiscent of Lawrence Sanders's "McNally" series (Putnam), the light, frothy humor is infectious. Thomas Lang is not exactly James Bond. He has military training and has done some bodyguard work, but on the whole he doesn't care to work too hard. When he is offered a contract on the life of a wealthy London businessman, not only does he turn down the offer, but he attempts to warn the "target" of his danger. This embroils him in a wild plot involving a notorious arms dealer, renegade CIA bigwigs, and a prototype for a military helicopter. There is mystery, intrigue, sex, and violence, all of which Lang tosses off with sarcastic wit and remarkable poise. Laurie's humor hits home. Although the subject is serious, even plausible, much of this comedy-thriller is laugh-out-loud funny and very readable. Highly recommended.?Joanna M. A promising first novel--think Wodehouse writing James Bond

I was trying to be pithy when I said to Jill that the difference between English and American comedians is that the English ones write their own material, for books by comedians are becoming quite common on both sides of the Atlantic. Their is a difference, however, and it is in the "type" of books that the two nationalities differ in: American comedians write up their monologues in a collected set of essays (Jerry Seinfield's Seinlanguage, Bill Cosby's books, Rita Rudner's I'm Naked Under My Clothes, Paul Reisner's book), whereas English comedians write novels (Python's Terry Jones and his books for children, Stephen Fry, and the case in point). I attribute the difference to education. Your typical American comedian skipped university to work through the comedy club circuit, hoping for that gig on the Tonight Show to make a break, get their own HBO special, then maybe movies or TV. British comedians typically begin in the comedy glee club of their universities (I believe it's the Cambridge "Footlights", or is that Oxford? As an American, I can't keep them straight, which is to Americans like saying I can't tell the difference between a Yankee and a Southerner), spend years as bit actors in off-West End productions, until finally they get picked up for a movie or a starring spot in their own West End revue. The British, thus, tend to be grounded in the literature of humor, rather than just the anecdotal type so favored by the Americans. Of course, I'm making this up out of whole cloth without bothering to do a spec of research, so I wouldn't base a thesis on it.
Hugh Laurie should be recognizable to you from his role as Bertie Wooster in "Wooster and Jeeves" (shown in American on Masterpiece Theater), as well as his supporting roles in the British comedy series "Blackadder" (a personal favorite), the Kenneth Branagh movie "Peter's Friends," the Ang Lee/Emma Thompsom collaboration of Austen's "Sense and Sensibility," and the recent dreadful live-action remake of Disney's "101 Dalmatians." The Gun Seller is his first novel, and after the Disney movie, I think he should chuck the acting business and go into writing full time, because he shows extreme promise as an author. Imagine Wodehouse deciding that he wanted to write a James Bond novel, and you've got some idea of what The Gun Seller is like.
The plot, which is actually more important here than it is in most modern comic novels, concerns Thomas Lang, ex-officer of the Scots Guard, who finds himself approached in Holland and asked to murder a man for an obscene amount of money. His sense of honor not only has him turn down the offer, but when he returns to England, he sets off to warn the man that someone is offering money for his death. In the best tradition, complications ensue, including the British Secret Service, the young daughter of a wealthy American businessman, an art gallery, the military-industrial complex, a terrorist organization called "The Sword of Justice," and a "kick-ass" helicopter.
Laurie is extremely witty, and chuckling at the language in this book should be expected. Take, for example, the typical description of the attractive woman--every spy and detective book seems to have one, right?--and how Laurie makes it unique:
"She came towards me and stopped. She was shorter than she'd looked on the other side of the room. I smiled again, and she took a cigarette from the packet, but didn't light it. She just played with it slowly, and then pointed a pair of green eyes at me.
I say a pair. I mean her pair. She didn't get a pair of someone else's eyes out from a drawer and point them at me. She pointed her own pair of huge, pale, grey, pale, huge eyes at me. The sort of eyes that can make a grown man talk gibberish to himself. Get a grip, for Christ's sake."
I like the way he is able to be self-referential without breaking the flow of the paragraph.
This book also has one of the best last lines I've read in a long time, making an ironic point that is quite amusing and yet also draws up the story in a conclusion. I liked this book a lot, and hope to read more by Laurie in the future.

If you like Hugh Laurie on "House" you'll love him as a writer. This is a witty, satirical send up of the spy novel and Thomas Lang is as refreshing and interesting a character as any today. He's a world wise, and somewhat weary, hero whose biting insights and view of life reflect the best and funniest in all of us.

Laurie has a great gift for dialogue and a flowing, almost stream of consciousness narrative style. It's a Great Book first or otherwise. Did I mention Exciting?

I discovered Hugh Laurie on the TV series "HOUSE". After I found out he had written a novel I had to read it. And I wasn't disappointed!! What a funny, witty, exciting novel!

Thomas Lang, a sort of bodyguard-for-hire, turns down a job to assassinate an American businessman, which leads to all sorts of trouble involving beautiful women, the CIA, helicopters, and terrorists. Wow!

Hugh Laurie has a great way with words. One tiny quibble--Laurie is British and the novel is of course full of British slang, some of which I don't understand. But hey, you can't win them all. I hope Hugh Laurie comes out with another book soon!

Best resource I have found for Revit Family creation standards and best practices.

I do prefer the hard copy though as I can keep notes in the margins that are more visually descriptive than the Kindle app allows.
