The wonderful artisanal breads from Silverton's La Brea bakery in Los Angeles have a national reputation. But Silverton is a pastry chef as wellDher first book was the excellent DessertsDand several years after she opened the bakery, she added pastries and other sweet baked goods to its repertoire. The follow-up to Breads from the La Brea Bakery, this book includes 150 recipes for mostly homey, rustic, though not necessarily simple-to-make treatsDSilverton says "show-off desserts" are not her style. There are her delicious Pecan Sticky Buns, Chocolate Croissants, and other "Morning Pastries"; Peach Cobbler, Nectarine-Ginger Crisp, and Belgian Sugar Pie; and muffins, quick breads, scones, and more, including a chapter of savory recipes. Recipe instructions are detailed and clear, and although there are old favorites here, there are many more unusual pastries as well. Highly recommended.

Flawless Recipes

I have baked my way through this fabulous cookbook for the last couple of years and have yet to come across a better cookbook for baking. Actually, I have to respectfully disagree with the reviewer who recommends Rose Levy Beranbaum's Pie & Pastry Bible over Pastries from the La Brea Bakery. Though I love Beranbaum's Cake Bible, I have found the recipes in The Pie & Pastry Bible to be fussy and rarely turn out as promised.
I consider myself a fairly experienced baker, but have always been intimidated by pastry. Yet I have tried several pastries from this cookbook and all have turned out beautifully (including the Pumpkin Pie, which is indeed the best I have ever had and got rave reviews from my Thanksgiving guests). The directions are clear and easy to follow and the sections on muffins, quickbreads, and scones will keep the novice baker busy for a while until she or he gets up the courage to try the croissants and tarts. Pity not the poor bride who gets this for a wedding gift --maybe her husband will give it a try while she's at work.
One word of caution --get ready to spend some money on kitchen equipment if you get addicted to Nancy Silverton's fabulous recipes. Some of them require cake rings and molds most home bakers don't have on hand. However, lest you be discouraged by that warning, I also have to say that many of the recipes require basic pans and tools.

If you love ginger and almonds...

This book loves certain ingredients, gingers and almonds in particular. If you do not like these two flavors overly much than you might want to hesitate buying the book right away. For those of you who do love those flavors than this book is for you. Graced with ginger cakes, ginger cookies and a variety of almond delights mixed with luscious fruit recipes you will be pleased. Not as technically exhaustive as _Breads of the LaBrea Bakery_ this is a nice collection of recipes with some baking tips thrown in. The Breads book was exhaustive in its detail and devotion to the making of bread whereas, this book is a nice collection that is much less daunting. All the recipes can be done the same day and are not as painstaking as a multi-day day artisan bread process using starters or special equipment.On the design -- the design is done in pretty font style with a little introduction by Ms. Silverton, list of ingredients and then instructions. BE SURE to read the instructions all the way through before starting. The instructions are done in long paragraph style and you can easily lose your place if you are not careful. The recipes are fun and quite delicious -- try the ginger lemon muffins or the almond chocolate tart. The sugar levels are not too high, but nothing has been stinted in butter, heavy whipping cream or any of those ingredients that makes baking fun. The ingredients are pretty attainable at any supermarket though I was surprised that she did not give a recipe for almond paste which is an ingredient that she uses in more than one recipe. She does, however, provide a vendor in almond paste. Recipes include the use of home made puff pastry, cobblers, rumbles, scones, tarts, cakes and sweets. These are great treats and her book may make you start investing in more specialized items like cake rings but they are not necessary to enjoy this book.Highly recommended.

Hard to follow directions

I recently purchased Nancy Silverton's Pastries from the La Brea Bakery and while I'm very excited and intrigued by many of the recipes and flavor combinations, I have a few issues with some of the directions given. for example, I tried the recipe for "Viennese Cream Brioche" - a circle of rich brioche filled with creme fraiche. For one thing the directions say to divide the dough into 12 parts and roll into five-inch rounds, then place the rounds on a baking sheet to rise. Obviously 12 five-inch rounds will not fit on a standard home cookie sheet, so you will have to use at least two pans and bake in shifts. OK, I can deal with this oversight, but when baked the filling did not "set" as the recipe indicated. In fact it separated into a greasy mess and never set up. Very frustrating and waste of good brioche dough.
Some of these issues could be cleared up with a few extra photos or diagrams. Another example: in a recipe for a "Princess Ring" you are instructed to roll croissant dough around a filling and then form it into a ring, then "along the inside of the ring, about 2 inches from where the 2 ends meet, make a cut 2 inches deep, cutting 3/4 of the way through to the outside edge. Make 5 more cuts evenly spaced along the inside of the ring". I re-read this direction many times and still can't figure out what I'm supposed to do or what the finished pastry should look like. I'm an experienced baker who doesn't need a photo of a scone or muffin to know what one looks like, and I certainly wasn't expecting a glossy coffee table show piece, but a couple line drawings or photos of key steps would have really helped this book.

Good for browsers

I like reading cookbooks. I mean, I like reading cookbooks in the same way that I like reading novels. If that's true for you as well, this book is a good choice (only beware, there are no pictures). As far as utility purposes go, this isn't a book for the casual chef. Many of the ingredients are obscure and many of the recipes call for over 10 ingredients. I disagree that it holds up well in the kitchen - I've only actually made a few recipes from it (I agree wholeheartedly about the Tofu-Basil Lasagna - but you can use regular white vinegar instead of umeboshi vinegar) and already some pages threaten to fall out.

I also value a cookbook that can convince me that its recipes have been thoroughly tested. I hate feeling that the money I've spent on the book and on the ingredients (for this book, the ingredients can get costly) as well as my time and effort were all just to satisfy a whim some chef had - instead of concrete evidence that a meal will be tasty. The Kripalu cookbook includes little stories about each recipe that I really appreciate and trust.

If I had unlimited funds and didn't have to work full time, this would be a primary resource in my cookbook collection. As it is, it's definitely a major player in my casual "flipping through" collection.

Kripalu Kitchen is still the best!

I love the earlier cookbook KRIPALU KITCHEN and use it all the time for simple, nutritious and tasty recipes that call for simple, basic ingredients. If you have fresh fruit and vegetables and good supply spices and dried herbs on hand, some butter, flour, soymilk, tamari sauce and perhaps some tofu, you've got all you need to create most of the wonderful recipes in KRIPALU KITCHEN.
THE KRIPALU COOKBOOK was written later on after Kripalu became corporate and changed its image from ashram to upscale health spa and the cookbook somehow reflects the change...recipes are seem just a bit more complicated and call for more ingredients...still very good but not as simple and versatile as KRIPALU KITCHEN.

I absolutely loved it and I think it's safe to say it's my favorite!

I've been dying to read Slate ever since I finished Jax because it left us with one heck of a cliffhanger! It's been a long wait filled with Facebook page stalking, excitement, and impatience, but it was all worth the wait because this book was fantastic! I absolutely loved it and I think it's safe to say it's my favorite!

Man, Rayna is awesome! I've liked her since the very beginning of this series and I definitely love her now that I've been inside her head. She's really just a great person, she has such a huge heart, and a warm, giving nature. You can always count on her to have your back and help you out no matter what the cost might be to herself. Rayna is a fun, sassy, mischievous schemer, but I wouldn't have had her be any other way! She's just a kicka*s heroine!

Now, Slate, was a total mess in Jax and I did have some doubt that Rayna would actually be able to help him, but all my doubts were for nothing. Yes, it's true that Slate is messed up and he can be a real jerk sometimes, but it wasn't hard to fall for him. He can be so kind and sweet and giving that he just broke my heart sometimes. I loved all of that and I especially loved his dominant, dirty talking, possessive self.

Slate is a fast read and while it won't make your heart hurt all the time, it will definitely cause some breakage. It's a HOT, heart aching, beautiful romance full of second chances not only in love, but in finding yourself again. I don't think you will be disappointed with this one, I know I sure wasn't!! It's special and I loved it!

Slate is a standalone, it's told from Slate and Rayna's POV, they do get their HEA, and OMG, do we get a cliffhanger about Zeke or what?!

Slate is definitely on FIRE!!!

If you didn't read book 1 of the Declan brothers, you surely missed out, but I have to tell you that book 2 is definitely a bit different. A bit more intense, a bit steamier, and with the two fighting to find each other again, there is more of a battle...

Slate Declan has been living through his own personal torture for years. It probably started the day he pushed the love of his life out the door, but became worse when he became trapped in a fire. The pain he lived with was his own and he didn't want to share it with anyone.

Rayna, while she loved Slate with all her heart, felt betrayed all those years ago, but when she decided on a Summer back home she had a plan to make sure he felt some of the same pain she did all those years ago.

Rayna & Slate both had lessons to learn. They had to learn to trust each other again and they had to realize that true love never really dies. The journey these two were taken on was intense.

This story had a lot of twists to it that surprised me. I didn't see them coming and they made the changes to the story that much more intense and welcoming. I loved everything about these two. And I also loved how everyone played a part in this story because what Slate was going through was not something that he could have battled alone.

Watching these two fall in love all over again and the sexual tension explode between them took this book up to another level! And took Slate from the sweetheart to just plain HAWTNESS!

Another awesome story. The series keeps getting better! I can't wait for Zeke's story!!!

The Declan brothers are a MUST READ!

I love these Declan brothers and Kelly is a genius at penning their stories - unique in a time of bandwagon jumpers. In the book Slate, we have a fighter, friends to lovers AND second chance romance. Throw in some drug abuse and all the bases are covered. But instead of a flagrant foul or illegal hit, Kelly hits a grand slam home run and even lights the fireworks after (see what I did there? I love my sports.)
Slate Declan may be the best fighter, but his emotional pain runs so deep that he turns to the drugs that once alleviated his physical pain. When he's not able to obtain any more legally, he turns to the street. His brothers have done what they can in an effort to help, but they are at a loss. When he sees Rayna back in town, all Slate wants to do is forget and keep her away. Unfortunately, Rayna's summer mission is to break Slate's heart. She's at a loss once she realizes what a mess he's become. She takes an extreme measure to force him to detox. During this time we learn of all the things that Slate did from the end of their senior year to the time Rayna left for college to push her away so that she could pursue her dreams and be happy. He dealt with the emotional scarring and depression the best he could and she was never the wiser. There's a lot of sarcastic a$$hole things said while high and detoxing, but Rayna gives back as god as Slate dishes out. Slate only agrees to the detox if he can f*ck Rayna at the end of it. When we finally see the type of man Rayna originally fell in love with and everything he has done for her since, all bets are off and instead of breaking his heart all she wants to do is cherish it. It's a long emotional road, but their HEA is in sight even if they both are unsure if Slate can stay clean.
I loved this read so very much. The road to physical and emotional well being is so unconventional but touched me deeper than most other books out there that attempt similar themes. If you've gotten this far and haven't one clicked yet, go do it now. You won't be disappointed.

Mediocre

I'm working on a project about Curie, so I've read several biographies about her thus far. This book isn't absolutely terrible, but I think it handles Curie poorly. It underexplains much about her life and motivations, gives little due to the science behind her work, and goes out of its way to make her "inner world" excessively dramatic. Curie's story is amazing and fascinating, but this book sacrifices explanatory detail and historical context in favor of an emotionally simplified (and thus more boring) version of the person. Even the title is misleading -- Curie was dedicated to her work and slightly reclusive, but she was hardly an obsessive personality.

I encourage you to please check out the longer but much more engrossing biography by Susan Quinn (titled Marie Curie: A Life (Radcliffe Biography Series)), which provides the historical and scientific context necesssary to make Curie's story really come alive.

A Fascinating Biography

Obsessive Genius is an utterly fascinating portrait of a hallowed and difficult subject. If you are a fan of Goldsmith's work, (I am) you will immediately see that she is the perfect person to give Curie the complexity and dimension she deserves --as a scientist and as a woman. It's a short book which is by turns moving, informative, and intriguingly unexpected. I couldn't put it down.

Captivating

I learned of this book in the magazine section of my Sunday newspaper. I strongly doubted that a nonfiction book would be able to hold my interest for long as they can be so dry and tedious, but the topic sounded interesting, the review was promising and as I am a huge historical fiction reader I thought it might be worth a try. I am so grateful that I ran across that recommendation or I would have missed out on a real gem!

The story grabbed me in right from page one. I couldn't wait to find some free time to be able to get back to reading! While definitely written as nonfiction, the story at times reads like a simple novel with short dialogue, letter excerpts and diary entries. These personal touches add a wonderful element to the book. The scientific explanations were presented very simplistically and were easy enough to understand. They too, added a wonderful and important element to the story.

Marie Curie's life was fascinating: a woman of rare intelligence and genius, she was also plagued by severe depression (especially after the loss of her beloved Pierre) and faced the constant struggle to prove herself and receive her much deserved credit in what was a very male-dominated field. Yet despite these struggles, her devotion to science and her world-changing discoveries never diminished; they enveloped her very soul. I must admit that at times, when reading about her accomplishments and the ease at which science came to her, I felt alittle inadequate and less than intelligent. She was an inspiration!

I was very happy to discover the wonderful coincidence that while I was reading this book, the anniversary of Marie Curie's discovery of radium and radioactivity took place. I strongly recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in science, history, women's rights, medicine or just plain life!

This book is very special to me, as it has many years of work and learning; in it one will see photos and haiku about the Torii and the Japanese bridge I built in my backyard, and how I have tried to integrate my appreciation for nature, art, literature, life, etc. with my every day life and the life around me. Este libro es una belleza por dentro y por fuera. Su hermosa car�tula que inmediatamente cautiva, el arte de Andy Castillo estrat�gicamente puesto para complementar los haikus en espa�ol, y los versos en japon�s, tan simples y a la vez tan complejos. Me pusieron a pensar, a apreciar la naturaleza; a meditar el hecho de estar viva. Es una riqueza visual y verbal, perfecto para la mesa de la sala. Yo he disfrutado mucho sentarme con una taza de t�, abrir este libro al azar y perderme uno o varios haikus. Keiselim A. Mont�s es un genio del haiku. Es algo admirable c�mo �l nos maneja este arte japon�s, en espa�ol. Como lo dijo Jos� Kozer en el excelente pr�logo de este libro (que adem�s te ayuda a entender los haikus), Mont�s sabe lo que es conjugar “alfabeto propio con alfabeto ajeno”. �Una verdadera belleza!

He tenido y le�do muchos, tantos libros a trav�s de los a�os y COMO EL AGUA debe estar entre los libros m�s hermosos que tengo. La plasticidad y profundidad, en tan poco espacio, de los poemas las complementan, de modo natural, las ilustraciones de Andy Castillo. He entendido, comprendido y comprehendido mejor cada poema por su ilustraci�n, y cada ilustraci�n por su poema. Y como punto de partida, que tambi�n es de llegada, est� la inmensa -por concentrada- introducci�n de Jos� Kozer, y COMO EL AGUA es un libro redondo. El libro merece, como una buena obra de teatro, ser le�do y ser visto. En resumen: una maravilla de poemario.

Despues de leer este libro he quedado inspirada nuevamente de la creatividad de este poeta y gran autor. En verdad es una verdadera obra de arte que pasar� a la historia por su originalidad. La ilustraci�n de la portada no se queda atr�s, es una maravilla al igual que la calidad del libro. Lo recomiendo a todas las personas que les gusta la poesia, es un libro fabuloso.
