A very educational book that is not only for teachers but for parents and leaders too!

Let me start off by stating that I am not a teacher by trade. I also do not work in that profession at all. What I am is a businessman. I am also a father.

I became very interested in this book after reading the description and after spending some time in my daughter's first grade classroom. We live in a small down in PA which is very diverse. I wouldn't say it is a poor town but it is on the lower end of some of the surrounding towns for sure. While volunteering in my daughter's class I was able to clearly see the struggles that some kids face and the burden that is placed on teachers whose job it is to not only educate but also to be a mentor for each and every kid in that class. Keep in mind that each child is from a different upbringing with different levels of struggles. This book helps increase the level of appreciation even greater than I already have for the teachers in this world and the weight that we place on their shoulders. They truly are a god send to the children who have no where else to turn.

This book has helped me identify some things to look out for and be aware of when it comes to helping raise my children as well as be aware of ways that I may be able to help other children in the community. I can be more understanding of the differences in the children my kids become friends with and even keep in mind some of the points that the author discusses to hopefully avoid frustration in the future. This book has also motivated me to try to play a bigger role in the education field when I have time. Things like mentoring and volunteering my time to help the educators and children is something that not only makes me feel better but I can also see the results of my efforts on the children's faces that I help.

I also feel that this book has helped me on a professional level as well. By understanding the upbringing of children, it also helps understand some of the behaviors of adults. Every adult was a child once and if they had to deal with certain struggles while growing up it will definitely have an impact on them and their actions as an adult. Since reading this book I have tried to take a step back and really pay attention to the actions of my coworkers as well as customers. Before getting frustrated because of differences I try to think about what the person might have gone through in the past and why we may be seeing things differently. I think this has made me a better person as well as a better leader professionally.

My only gripe about this book though is I wish there were more examples of things that students shared with their teachers. More real life examples so that we could be even more prepared to assist or identify when areas of concern are discovered. I took a star off of my rating for this because I truly believe that those types of examples and how they were handled would have made a much greater impact on the readers.

Terrific intro to the issues

This is the best deep and practical introduction to data cleaning that I have seen. It provides an excellent overview of the practical problems in data cleaning, gives a good intuitive feeling for the core issues of outliers and robust statistics, and overviews of a good set of techniques for addressing data cleaning issues in a practical but relatively deep manner. It doesn't try to provide cookbook solutions, and instead points out the complexities and leaves the reader with a toolbox to work on tackling them.

The really interested reader will want to augment the book with some other reading, including (on the practical side) a book or website of tips on how to express robust statistics in SQL (the O'Reilly book on TransactSQL has good stuff), and (on the more statistical side) a deeper introduction to robust statistics (e.g. Rousseeuw and Leroy's Robust Regression and Outlier Detection).

In a future edition it would be nice to see more discussion of timeseries outliers, as well as an SQL cookbook that will run on commodity databases of modest size (which is the common case in practice, as opposed to the massive TelCo databases that the authors discuss).

About the Author

RAYMOND M. BROOKS is a Professor of Finance at Oregon State University. He has taught a variety of finance courses, including introduction to financial management, investments, advanced corporate finance, financial institutions, financial planning, and risk management. Previously, he taught at Washington University in St. Louis; the University of Southern Illinois, Edwardsville; and the University of Missouri–Columbia. Professor Brooks has authored a variety of articles on topics from dividends to when-issued trading. He has twice won best papers awards at financial conferences. Professor Brooks was a springboard diver for the Oregon State swim team and continues to enjoy swimming, hiking, music, reading, and watching OSU athletic teams.

Terry Pinkard draws on Hegel's central works as well as his lectures on aesthetics, the history of philosophy, and the philosophy of history in this deeply informed and original exploration of Hegel's naturalism. As Pinkard explains, Hegel's version of naturalism was in fact drawn from Aristotelian naturalism: Hegel fused Aristotle's conception of nature with his insistence that the origin and development of philosophy has empirical physics as its presupposition. As a result, Hegel found that, although modern nature must be understood as a whole to be non-purposive, there is nonetheless a place for Aristotelian purposiveness within such nature. Such a naturalism provides the framework for explaining how we are both natural organisms and also practically minded (self-determining, rationally responsive, reason-giving) beings. In arguing for this point, Hegel shows that the kind of self-division which is characteristic of human agency also provides human agents with an updated version of an Aristotelian final end of life.
Pinkard treats this conception of the final end of "being at one with oneself" in two parts. The first part focuses on Hegel's account of agency in naturalist terms and how it is that agency requires such a self-division, while the second part explores how Hegel thinks a historical narration is essential for understanding what this kind of self-division has come to require of itself. In making his case, Hegel argues that both the antinomies of philosophical thought and the essential fragmentation of modern life are all not to be understood as overcome in a higher order unity in the "State." On the contrary, Hegel demonstrates that modern institutions do not resolve such tensions any more than a comprehensive philosophical account can resolve them theoretically. The job of modern practices and institutions (and at a reflective level the task of modern philosophy) is to help us understand and live with precisely the unresolvability of these oppositions. Therefore, Pinkard explains, Hegel is not the totality theorist he has been taken to be, nor is he an "identity thinker," � la Adorno. He is an anti-totality thinker.

Unfortunately, there were no reviews available when I bought my copy. This is strictly undergrad material; nothing deeper. So beware. If you are familiar with Hegel stay clear of this book. It has a 2012 publication date but has no contemporary trends addressed. A good book for a junior in college. There could have been other avenues of addressing the topics; but the target audience might have been undergrads. They need books too. Not recommended to those who know Hegel's work

Jim Champy is one of the leading thinkers in business. Curse the profiteering medical professionals who contributed to the publication

It was published in 2010 and given the time (likely 3 weeks) it took to write, I may be a tad too harsh.

First my comedic response:
If you have ever applied a band aid, then you have far too much healthcare knowledge for this desolate work of literature.
If you are reading this review using the internet then you understand far more than this print can teach you about technology.

Now my justifiable review:
Disclaimer: This book may have not been for me, the intended audience may have been "people who know Jim Champy and felt obligated to read it".

- The book starts off by explaining what "reegineering" is and what "Reegineering the Corporation" is all about. That's okay.
- It goes into laying the foundation and principle belief of reegineering. That's okay as well.
- Jim Champy takes credit that his 1993 publication and previous work is responsible for business today and everything else is just a sublet umbrella term. That's okay, but I'd personally beg to differ.
-It has the nerve to indirectly state "healthcare reform" won't get the job done, but you're safe if you read on.

Now the book finally starts into what you believe will be the good parts. Wrong, spoiler alert, there are no good parts. The book is full of fluff from the body structure to the style of writing. I feel as if I'm reading a freshman's college paper that has a word length requirement. Champy gives bios of those he uses as examples. Long bios that no one cares to hear, because those people mean nothing to setting the tone for discussing reegineering healthcare. "So what:", you say? Let Jim accredit his people. Wrong. The "examples" are just stories of people who did things in healthcare. That's the best way to put it. Nothing ground breaking or really worth hearing. Nothing is laid out as far as applying reegineering methodologies to healthcare.

Amazon did a great job with shipping, I hope they do an even better job with refunding me time lost reading this work.

Let me tell you a story in the way this book is written:
I was stranded in the middle of a dessert with a flat car tire. I drive a 2002 Toyota. [Insert history of Toyota] I didn't have a spare tire. [talk about spare tires and how useful they are]. My cell phone was dead. [talk about how innovative cell phones are]. There was not a car in sight for many miles. I sat for hours. I changed the tire and drove on.

Useful Ideas on Process Improvement in Hospitals

I found a lot of useful ideas and interesting stories in Reengineering Health Care, and it was an entertaining read (at least for me, a process improvement wonk).

I read it this week to help me prepare for a meeting I had with a hospital. Our conversation was mostly about how to engage physicians in changing the patient experience, something that is focused on a lot in this book. I particularly liked the various stories of Zeev Neuwirth, such as the way he used data about physicians as a fact-based way to defuse defensiveness, and his approach to choosing 20 high potential up-and-coming physicians for a leadership program.

The process, people, technology framework worked well. There was a little too much on electronic health records for my taste. Traditional reengineering focuses on big change in core end-to-end processes, such as order fulfillment, and this book covers this territory and takes a wider view of organizational change that surrounds process reengineering to highlight the importance of engaging people.

Good Book

My basic review is that it is a good book. Not very detailed in how nor very rich in data, as it contains mostly stories of how new innovation is occurring in healthcare. The authors make a lot of assumptions, and being an IT person in the healthcare industry I can notice where some of those assumptions were made. It seemed to me the authors assume you are familiar with how healthcare works, though that is their target audience.

They make good points that it is the work of people that is needed to make the changes, not just fancy new tech or slick sounding government programs. While new technology is essential, and improved regulation (not necessarily more) will benefit the healthcare industry, much of what needs to change is the culture and delivery of healthcare. We have more knowledge than we ever have, but getting it to people and using it to improve heath is difficult.
