No, no, no...much better books out there

I respectfully disagree with the other reviewer. There are MUCH better books out there, whether they are compendiums or single-technique books. The biggest problems with this book are: the few projects shown are cheesy, the stitch diagrams have gone down that pastel guess-where-the-needle-goes path and the nice close-up photos of the stitches are disconnected from the diagrams. Instead of this book, consider the following:

A Great Resource for Stitchers of all Kinds

The book's clean and fresh layout takes you through almost every foundational stitch and technique imaginable in the realm of needle arts from beginning to advanced. There are lots of A-Z type stitch dictionaries for someone who wants just that but this is a more modern take that also shows corresponding inspirational projects. Younger converts to needlework would appreciate this book I think as it provides an introduction to a very wide range and combination of stitches from sewing and basic embroidery to stumpwork, couching, and drawn work with big color photos that do not look like something out of a pre-1990's craft book (biggest plus of this book).
The structure of the book is such that it's a good starting point for inspiration as well as a thorough stitch dictionary. I liked that because I could see how different stitches could be used and combined even if I didn't like the projects themselves. To be clear, this is not a book with patterns or full how to instructions for a project. Rather, the finished projects shown provide clear, modern examples of how stitches should and can look. Drawn stitch diagrams at the end with text show how each individual technique is accomplished.
I keep a handful of needlework books in my personal library and this is one of them--only the most helpful get to stay on the shelf and I have found this one to be quite helpful!

A must-have for needleartist or needlework judge

After five minutes with this book (checked out from my local library) I knew I had to buy it. Written by a UK-based contemporary embroidery artist, this book organizes information in a fashion intuitive for any teacher or judge, and readily accessible for a beginner. The techniques discussed in the first section are diverse; each entry consists of definition, color photos of samples, stitches commonly used, ground fabrics, threads, needles, other equipment, and common applications. The second section is a stitch directory; clear diagrams, method and uses, related techniques, and similar stitches are provided for each entry. The text is extensively cross-referenced and overall production values are very high. It is not a project book, but is of a size and weight that make it readily transportable in a stitching bag. It’s a nice complement to the needlework dictionaries by Pamela Clabburn and Gay Swift.
