This book is definitely for the professional using InDesign CS5. Was thinking it would make a good textbook for a class I am teaching. Too detailed for a community college market.

Great information for the working professional

I'm writing this review based on the first 100 pages. It's a very dense, information-packed book, and it may be a few months before I get through all of it. I'll revise this review, if needed, when I finish.

I make my living using InDesign constantly, and I'm impressed to find so much in this book that I didn't know. (The use of the Tab special character within a table to be able to tab there instead of jumping to the next field just saved me several minutes of cursing.)

I have a personal preference for printed textbooks, and no real problem with black and white illustrations, so I'm happy I purchased the printed version.

Pariah Burke's explanations of the points he is making is very clear and understandable. He is evidently trying to cover everything that is in the program, so if you are an ID newbie, this book may seem overwhelming. Though it is not a breezy read for someone that wants to get the basics of the program quickly, I would recommend it to anyone that wants to master InDesign for an efficient workflow. This is definitely a book that will stay on my shelf as a reference after I'm done reading it.

Finally answered vexing questions I had

This book explained what's been bugging me about InDesign master pages and how to fix them. It's saved me a lot of windows. The only thing keeping me from marking this a 5-star is that, with a book so dense, a more in-depth index would have been killer. I highly recommend it, ESPECIALLY if you're entering the InDesign world from Quark XPress.

Delightful, Amusing, and Educative.

"How to Quote Shakespeare in Everyday Life" is truly delightful! It makes the archaic, 400 year old language accessible to the modern reader, and it does so in such an enjoyable way by juxtaposing modern English phrases ( placed in the context of common situations) with the elegant, beautiful words of the Bard. What a perfect read for both those familiar with Shakespeare and for those with no experience, and perhaps intimidated or put off by the complexities of the language. The author gives us so many suggestions and opportunities to use inspiring language of Shakespeare to elevate our daily interactions with others. Left to my own devices I might say that "No praise is too high" for this delightful, amusing read. However armed with the examples and inspiration of this book, I will say: "For thou shalt find [this book] will outstrip all praise
And make it halt behind her"!

"Too soon old -- and too late smart?" -- maybe not.

Where was this book when I most needed it? Each year of high school English class was inevitably accompanied by a required reading of Shakespeare. Freshman year - Midsummer Night's Dream, Sophomore year - Romeo and Juliet; Junior year Macbeth; all culminating in senior year - Hamlet. It was as anxiously anticipated as chewing broken glass. Little did I know how enjoyable these books could really be - if only one truly understood what one was reading. Denomme's book on the application of Shakespeare quotes in everyday life has unraveled that longstanding mystery for me. In fact, it has even prompted me to return to some of those same formerly tortuous tales with new found insight and understanding of the real genius behind these literary pieces. While some have experienced those "Ah-ha" moments of self-discovery, I enjoyed numerous "Oh, so that's what he meant" moments. In a series of short, often humorous, but sometimes emotion-packed quotes, Denomme opened my eyes to the wit and the creative brilliance of this literary giant. Thank you good sir!

Shakespeare can be fun, and relevant!

If you have a deathly fear of couplets, but think Shakespeare must have had a few "neat" ideas, look no further for a fun, informative, and insightful look into the man of words' world. This book lets you romp through hundreds of situations and find out what the old dude might have said, and to borrow his words without paying for them! It's fun to just wander through at random, and see what you find. Any weird, unusual words are explained with patience and good humor by the author. He evens looks like Shakespeare! (see back cover).

Well, after reading it, I may say one thing – it is an interesting book, covering many topics around a database, but it is not exactly a hands-on book about databases. E.g., if this is the first database book you are reading, you have to take a second one to be able to build some simple database to work with. At least my opinion.

The book uses MS Access and Libre Office 5 as an example databases, refers to MS Excel as well. The book is good for people, who do not have clue about databases, to act as an introduction to this world and probably to realize that their business needs a database instead of Excel spreadsheets. The case studies in the first few chapters are well described, and later some procedures for collecting, cleansing, maintaining, searching and analyzing data and database are explained without getting into details. In a really beginner’s way, which may be good for the understanding of a manager.

Let’s stop the hate (although I am not hating, but it just comes out this way) and point out some positive things –
– Some philosophy behind databases is explained in a really simple level with simple words – that would be good for anyone outside the IT business;
– Options for presenting the data as charts in Excel are given – at first I was thinking that this is a little aside from the book, but then I thought it is probably not so bad;
– Basic statistical terms as mode and median are explained – same as previous comment;

Actually I am really wondering how many stars to give – if you are expecting after reading this book to be able to make and maintain even a simple database alone, I have to probably disappoint you – you will not be. Really no. E.g. the querying in a db is explained in 2 pages, SQL is not mentioned, not all normalization rules are given.
However, if you are a manager of a company, and you have never heard about Databases nor you have some IT skills, this is probably the best book in the market to start with – the technical information will really not bother you, and the examples would be understandable. Thus, any grade is really possible for this book. I would not give 5, as far as the example databases are not shared in the net.

Thus, my grade is a 4, hoping that you only need the book to get some basic ideas for databases. And you would not try to create and maintain a database based only on this knowledge.

Highly recommended and worth the time!

Anyone with a small business knows how time consuming and multi-faceted such an endeavor can be. When I picked up this book, I was a bit worried it would be too technical or not add relevant value to my particular small business. I was pleasantly surprised to see it was written in a fashion easy for a layman to understand. The four different case studies give one a clear idea of how databases might be utilized in different business scenarios. The book then goes on to give a step by step process of selecting, designing and maintaing a database for one's organzation, with many examples and diagrams that help make the concepts clear. There is an entire chapter on reporting the data to those integral to the business and another on how to use the analysis for the benefit of the business.

If you are stuck on spreadsheets and unsure of whether a database will add value to your business, this book will definitely enlighten you! Highly recommended and worth the time!

Excellent Guide for Small Businesses and Non-profits alike

In "Databases for Small Business", Anna Manning shows how small businesses and non-profits quickly outgrow the usefulness of using spreadsheet package to organize their data. She then makes the case that these organizations need a database instead, and argues that rather than paying for pre-packaged solutions, they can instead design and implement their own database, using software such as MS Access.

This book lays out a path for these organizations to follow, steering them through various aspects of database design and creation. The book also teaches users how to set up queries to retrieve data from the database, and then goes further to show how the data in the database can by analyzed in order to spot important patterns and trends that the data contains. The book also gives much practical advice on other aspects of database ownership, such as database maintenance, backup, security as well as touching on data protection and privacy issues - even training staff to use the database is covered.

The author keeps things grounded in reality throughout the book by using three ongoing cases studies in the examples in each chapter. I found these case studies to be really useful, as they allow Anna to cover the specifics of dealing with various data items, everything from customer and supplier information, sales, to lists of materials.

For something in this area, the book is unusually complete. Using this as a guide, small organizations should be able to safely and securely migrate their data into a database, and reap the rewards as they go forward. For those wishing to dig deeper in certain areas, the book points to other sources of information for further reading.

Looks complex but well worth the historically accurate results!

This book is *THE* guide for tailoring suits of the 1890s. When I first flipped through the book in the store, I was intimidated by the diagrams shown throughout the book. But honestly, if you have a roll of wide paper, a large ruler, a quilter's square, a french curve set, a few pens and pencils, and a calculator, it isn't very difficult. You just have to be sure to follow the directions carefully--and pay attention for slight mistakes in the print (I have found just two so far, and they're just a matter of common sense, one being the size of a measurement needing to be 1/6 of something instead of 1/3).

Once you have drafted your basic bodice pattern, you essentially use it again and again as a base for most of the jacket and shirtwaist patterns in the book--so you just have to retrace them and make the changes for the new pattern. And the method of measuring ensures the right fit the first time (as long as you remember to add seam allowances on the pattern edges).

If you don't like or need the "Leg 'O Mutton" sleeves, you can substitute the plain sleeve pattern included in the book. Most of the patterns, with some modifications, will work well for a range of about 1877-1882 and 1890 to 1905. You could even use the vest pattern for a modern vest, or even a men's vest if you lessen the measurements in the bust area. The longer jacket patterns would work very nicely for modern coats, as well.

One thing--if you want to look authentic, you will need a corset (no pattern is included in the book). trulyvictorian.com has a great pattern that is very easy to work with (I've used it to great success before). If you don't need a corset, it won't be a problem since the patterns are drawn to measure to fit you.

Straightforward and clear instructions.

I haven't yet made any of the patterns in this book, but the instructions look to be very straightforward and simple to follow.
I'd say that anyone with an understanding of pattern drafting would have no trouble using this book to create authentic period costumes.
A few illustrations with each set of drafting instructions would be helpful (mainly so you know exactly what style you are working on), but all in all i think this is an excellent book for the price.

While the directions were rather complicated, a working knowledge of tailoring and pattern construction make this book usable, and it is an excellent reference for a wide variety of couture clothing.

Fantastic adventures in the land of Arabian Nights..

I will say that Husain Haddawy's translations of "The Arabian Nights" are the best you'll read for quite some time. I've had these books for awhile now and they're great. Haddawy has done a remarkable job and provides great introductions for both books. A map is also provided in each book showing the locales mentioned in the stories.
There are really two volumes you will need to get the complete collection. This volume has the earlier stories as told by Shahrazad, classic tales of mystery, fun, and excitement.
The second book " The Arabian Nights II" has the more popular stores most people are familiar with. Sinbad the Sailor, Ali Baba and the Fourty Thieves, Ala al-Din (Aladdin) and the Magic Lamp.
Be sure to get them both and you'll be transported to the mystical lands of Arabian Nights. Enjoy.

So much more than I expected! Accept no other translation!

I really had no idea how much I would enjoy this! I came to it with some vague recollections of some of the tales as they had been adapted into children's stories, but I soon discovered I actually knew almost nothing about the Arabian Nights.
The introduction was extremely helpful in explaining the history of the Arabian Nights, why there are different versions, and why those different versions may contain different tales. This volume collects the oldest, "original" tales. More familiar stories that were added later--such as Sinbad and Aladdin--are collected in a separate volume, Arabian Nights II.
This translation is an absolute joy to read. The language is vivid and alive--thoroughly modern, yet (judging from the effect on me as a reader) certainly successful in conveying the nuances of the original text.
I glanced at the Modern Library Burton edition after reading this. It reads like a King James Bible. Why subject yourself to a translation that you to re-translate in order to read--especially with a wonderful modern translation like this available? How terribly that must choke the pace of the stories!
I felt like the King himself as I read this, knowing that I needed to put it down to go to sleep, but constantly telling myself, "Well, maybe I'll push on for just one more night..." Funny, sexy, violent, and packed with magic and adventure, it really had it all.
Except for children, for whom the original tales are too sexual and violent, I can hardly imagine an audience this WOULDN'T appeal to!

Best version of the "Nights" -- hands down!

I have loved the Arabian Nights since I was a kid. But its fame as a "children's book" has often been a disadvantage -- most editions are simplified, hobbled and sanitized. The unedited versions geared more for adults are a hundred years old, and often show their age. Burton, for example, is an impressive edition but the language is almost a parody of High Victorian English. This edition by Haddawy is almost as perfect as it could possibly be. First, the introduction is wonderful and definately worth reading on its own -- how many times can you say *that* about a book? It sets the stage for understanding the work, the problems in translating it, and the world the Nights came from. It is clearly, smoothly written. These strengths are carried over to the main text as well. The writing is so direct, modern, vivid, and thrilling! It effortlessly takes you into this vanished world of danger, love, magic and adventure. Many expressions are modernized, such as "demon" for "genie" or "God" for "Allah," which work well, although I wouldn't have minded the the more "romantic" terms. Haddawy explains his choice of stories... the full original text only contains about 300 nights worth of tales. Most of the famous stories were added later (Aladdin, Sindbad, etc.) in response to greater interest in the work. Readers looking for these stories should check out Haddawy's companion volume, "Arabian Nights II," which has these famous stories and shares almost all the virtues of this volume. Finally, these books are wonderfully put together: great paper, type, binding... very satisfying just as a physical form. For those who loved these stories, or anyone with a sense of adventure, buy this! Buy it now!

The Origins of Winnie with Beautiful Illustrations and Storyline! Superbly Done! Well Worth It! AAA+++

Purchased this for my nephew, which is six years old. He absolutely loved the book, the illustrations and the whole concept of the origins of Winnie the Pooh. This book follows Winnie from his origins of being found in Ontario all through the various stages of how Winnie came to be Winnie, that we know and love!

He loved the watercolored illustrations and it was really well done throughout the book, ending in photos from the original storylines.

This is a must have book for all younger kids! AAA+++

I've added some pics of the beautiful illustrations and ending photos for you to see what I mean, when I say it's really well done.

Wonderful addition to any child's library

This is a beautiful book with a very touching story. I love Caldecott books; they never disappoint. The cute story, connection to real events, memorable artwork, and realia in the back of the book make this book a winner.
I gave this to my 6-year-old niece with a stuffed, black bear cub because I am the worlds greatest Uncle.
Everyone was very impressed with this book, the bear, and my awesomeness.

Such an Amazing Book

I absolutely love this book. It is such a neat and interesting book. I purchased this book for a class; we had to write a paper about a children's picture book. I was browsing through books and I saw this and saw that it had an award, so I chose it. I fell in love with this book after reading it. It is a book that I can share with my niece and my fututre children. I would highly recommend it to anyone. I love the idea behind the book. The book actually has different stories within it, while telling one of the most important stories of all time; the bear who inspired Winnie the Pooh. The illustrations in this book are absolutely stunning and gorgeous. I also love that at the end of the book there are the actual photos of Winnie.

The OT Bible for Physical Dysfunction

I'm in OT school right now and this is our bible for interventions concerning physical dysfunction. I know in a beautiful world without production quotas we would all look up meta-analysis studies before working with each patient, but this give you a quick run down of the most important things to do, look for, and not do. I will be buying the revised edition whenever it comes out.

this is actually a really good textbook. We use many books in our program that are really dry and do not provide case study examples. This text makes it easier to understand the topics because of the "extra" information throughout the chapters: references, case studies, etc.

I bought this to have as an all-in-one resource for OT practical skills before going out on req 16 wk fieldwork. I have found it helpful and am using it to study for the boards.
