An Important Book

This book is framed modestly but it is a revolutionary contribution to the philosophy of taste, focusing not on our most refined experiences (as most Western aesthetic texts do) but on ordinary likes and dislikes. Anyone who is interested in thinking subtly about the nature of our pleasures and preferences will find this book to be both accessible and fascinatingly complex.

inspiring
By aesthetic junkie
usually these types of books start out good and die a slow death with too many overly wrought examples that kill the essential experience of ephemeral ideas. Not this one! I found many examples truly inspiring and easy to incorporate into my everyday life. i thought about some of the passages for weeks. well worth the read.

This book is fantastic; the topic is rather hard to approach and when written about can easily encroach on being elitist or seem overly dogmatic, Yuriko Saito manages to avoid these pit-falls. Well researched, credit is given where due, editing is superb, ideas are well rounded out yet leave room for independent thought and the reference list is absolutely indispensable. Highly recommended!
