Michael S. Oberlaender is a world-renowned security executive, thought leader, author and subject matter expert and has worked in executive level security roles (CSO/CISO) both in the US and EU (Germany) and in IT for over two decades. Most recently he has been serving as Chief Security Officer for the largest European cable network provider (Kabel Deutschland AG) in Munich, Germany and before served as Chief Information Security Officer for FMC Technologies Inc, a leading oil field services and engineering company in Houston, TX. Prior he was the Global IT Security Manager for Heidelberg Americas, Inc. in Atlanta, GA – the US subsidiary of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG - the world leader in printing press manufacturing. Before that he worked several years as Project Leader Security and Networks with Suedzucker AG in Mannheim, Germany, the world market leader in sugar and Europe’s largest food company where he has planned, built and run their complete Internet binding and DMZ solutions. He has more than two decades professional IT experience and is a member in good standing of (ISC)�, ISACA, InfraGard, and several industry associations and is certified CISSP, CISM, CRISC, CISA, ACSE, and GSNA (all current and in good standing). CISO Perspective from the Trenches

A number of CISO's have written "how to" books, describing how they practiced information security. Mr. Oberlaender's book seems to be the latest of this type. On the plus side are a number of thought provoking war stories from his experience. Also, good condensed approaches to risk assessment, incident response and other key security processes. Overall, the book is an entertaining 83 pages, another plus. On the negative side: a couple of graphics are really hard to read; also, 13 pages of bullet points on secure coding did not improve my understanding. In total, I recommend this book for any security manager looking for new ideas on how to secure his/her own organization.

Security - a good friend and advisor of any organization

This book is a well-structured introduction of how IT-security does work when it's implemented at all levels and with clear objectives. It's easy to understand these rules that are supposed to be part of the daily business to prevent it from any kind of harm and threat.
The author Michael S. Oberlaender uses plain English instead of geek-speech while the book of course focuses on security experts of all kinds. Obviously he has been working in the field of business (information) security for almost 25 years and provides a wealth of experience having worked with global players. He argues that any organization should become safe comprehensively: He explains why security doesn't end with securing IT only but instead every person and every building must be integrated as part of the whole security ecosystem.
"C(I)SO - And Now What?" is easy to read, explained in a thrilling way that changes your perspective on security: not as a challenge one could not win but instead as a good friend & advisor of any organization.
